what are tectonic plates ?

Plate tectonics is the theory

that Earth's outer shell is
divided into several plates
that glide over the mantal ,
the molten rocky layout
above the core
Major Plstes
These Plates account for 94% of Earth’s surface area

North America
South America
Pacific
African
Eurasian
Australian-India
Antarctic Plates
Plate tectonic theory

In 1912, Alfred Wegener, a

German meteorologist and
geophysicist, proposed the
Continental Drift Theory.
The Continental Drift
Theory states that the
continents were once joined
together, and over time had
drifted apart.
What are the tectonic plates ?

Lithospheric plate
 The 100-km-thick surface of the earth
 Contains crust and part of upper mantle
 It is rigid and brittle
 Fractures to produce earthquakes
What is the asthenosphere?

Asthenosphere:
 Is the hotter upper mantle below the lithospheric plate;
 Can flow like silly putty; and
 Is a viscoelastic solid, NOT liquid!!
Tectonic plate boundary
A tectonic plate boundary is the border between two plates.
The tectonic plates slowly and constantly move but in many
different directions. Some are moving toward each other, some
are moving apart, and some are grinding past each other.
Three basic types of tectonic plate boundary
1.Divergent
2.convergent
3.Transform
Convergent plate boundary

A convergent boundary is
an area on Earth Where
two or more lithospheric
plates collide.
Types of Convergent plate boundaries
Divergent plate boundary
A divergent plate boundary is
an area where two tectonic
plates are moving away from
each other. There are two
types of divergent boundaries
categorized by where they
occur:
Continental rift zones
Mid-ocean ridges
Transform plate Boundaries
A transform boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move
past one another. Many transform boundaries are found on
the sea floor, where they connect segments of diverging mid-
ocean ridges.
Example of Transform plate Boundaries

California's San Andreas fault is a transform plate boundary.

What causes plates to move?

Plates move only 1-10 centimeters per year.
