PARAGRAPH
• DEFINITION∶ A paragraph is a distinct section of writing covering one topic.
• A paragraph will usually contain more than one sentence.
• A typical paragraph will be 5-7 sentences, but this is by no means a rule.
• The length is determined by the topic and the content.
• PERFECT PARAGRAPH
• A perfect paragraph will start with a topic sentence. It will start with a topic sentence.
It will have detail sentences in the middle and end with a concluding sentence. It will
only cover one topic from start to finish.
COMPONENTS OF A PARAGRAPH
• A paragraph has three main components-

TOPIC SENTENCE:
The topic sentence is a sentence that summarizes the main idea of a paragraph.
Also known as a focus sentence, it encapsulates or organizes an entire paragraph.
Begins the paragraph and introduces the controlling idea of the paragraph.

Example: “Cats are very good pets for various reasons”


MAIN BODY
Refers to the section where the supporting sentences are located.
Each supporting sentence should contribute to the overall coherence and clarity of
the paragraph.
It’s where you provide detailed information, examples, evidence, or explanations
that support and develop the main idea presented in the topic sentence.
The main body elaborates on the topic sentence, providing substance and depth to
the paragraph’s content.
CONCLUSION
The conclusion of a paragraph serves to summarize the main point or argument
presented in the paragraph.
It may also provide a transition to the next paragraph.
It reinforces the significance of the topic sentence and supporting details while
offering closure to the reader.
It leaves the readers with a clear understanding of the paragraph.

• Support
• Coherence
• Good language
• Variety of structures
• UNITY
Refers to the paragraph’s focus on a single main idea or topic.
Every sentence in the paragraph should contribute to developing this central idea.
Interconnection between topic sentences, supporting sentences and conclusion.
• SUPPORT
Involves providing evidence, examples, explanations, as well as details.
Relevant information to strengthen the argument or discussions.
Enhances credibility and persuasiveness of the paragraph’s content.
• COHERENCE
Refers to the clarity and logical flow of ideas within the paragraph.
Transitional words (linkers) and phrases, such as “furthermore”, “in
addition”, or “however” help to connect sentences and maintain coherence.
Organizing sentences in logical sequence
Ensuring that the paragraph is easy to follow and understand.
• GOOD LANGUAGE AND VARIETY OF STRUCTURES
Use of-
 good vocabulary
 sentence structure
 Transitions
 figurative language etc.
