Introduction

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful,

practical work related to a student's field of study or career interest.

An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and
development, and to learn new skills.

I spend my time working on relevant projects, learning about the field, making
industry connections, and developing both hard and soft skills. Internships
sometimes even lead to full-time job offers.

Department of Civil Engineering 3

Internship can provide unique opportunities for learning outside of academic settings. It
can expose you to new tasks and help you learn goal-specific skills to complete those
tasks. Internships also give you experience with technology, people and projects that may
relate to your career goals.

An engineering intern is taken on by a company for on-the-job learning of engineering

skills. Engineering interns tend to be recent university graduates with degrees in
engineering who are seeking relevant real-world experience in the workplace

Introduction about the company
G K Constructions, led by Raghavendra G N, an accomplished BE graduate
with a talent for architectural design and railway contracting, stands as a beacon
of excellence in the construction industry.

With a keen eye for detail and a passion for innovation, Raghavendra leads his
team with unparalleled expertise and dedication.

The residential office of G K Construction serves as a hub of creativity and

professionalism, where ideas are brought to life and projects are meticulously
planned and executed.

Work assigned during the Internship

The actual work carried out during the internship. A total of four weeks of
internship i.e. from 28-08 2023 to 28-09-2023 carried out during the
internship programme.

During the internship, different activities are carried out such as layout
construction & Residential building construction.

Department of Civil Engineering 7

And also, visited RMC Plant, different sites and learnt different concepts in
civil engineering construction.

 Different tasks were given by the site engineer during the internship such
as importance of by-laws, building line-out, construction of foundation,
materials used in construction, building drawings etc

Work carried out during Internship

Requirement for residential accommodation are different for different

classes of people & depends on the income & status of the individual a
highly rich family with require a luxurious building, while a poor man we
satisfied with a single room house for even poor class family.

A standard residential building of bungalow type which has drawing room,

dining room office room, guest room, kitchen room, store, pantry, dressing
room, bath room, front veranda, stair etc., for other house the number of
rooms may be reduced according to the requirements of many available.

Site 1-Plinth Beam

A plinth beam is a reinforced concrete structure element that serves as a

horizontal support at the ground level of a building.

It is typically located at or just above ground level and forms the base of the
structure, providing stability and distributing the load of the superstructure
evenly to the foundation.

The primary purpose of plinth beam is to prevent difference settlement and

ensure uniform distribution of loads, particularly in areas with variable soil
condition.
Department of Civil Engineering 10
Construction around the periphery of the building, the plinth beam connects
and ties together the individual columns, creating a continuous ring of
horizontal reinforcement.

This reinforcement helps in resisting lateral forces such as wind or seismic

loads, contributing to the overall structural integrity of the building. The
design of a plinth beam involves careful consideration of the building’s
load-bearing requirement, soil characteristics, soil characteristics, and local
building codes.

Department of Civil Engineering 11

It is the first beam framework construction in the skeletal structure. The
void between the foundation and plinth is filled with compacted soil.

 Brick or stone masonry is usually constructed below plinth beam we saw

the plinth beam which was constructed at near Layout.

The function of plinth beam is to hold the wall and acts as element where
the walls can rest.

Site 2-Masonary Work

Masonry work is started by using burnt clay brick of english bond.

 Masonry is the craft of building a structure with brick, stone, or similar

material, including mortar plastering which are often laid in, bound and
pasted together by mortar.

The term masonry can also refer to the building units (stone, brick, etc.).

Department of Civil Engineering 16

• PROPORTION OF MORTAR: The proportion of mortar shall be one part of
cement to six parts of sand by volume.

• Cement shall be standard quality, sand shall be clean.

• MIXING OF MORTAR: Only the quantity of mortar which can be used

within 30minutes shall be prepared at a time.

• SOAKING OF BRICKS: Bricks shall be soaked in water before use for a

period for the water to just penetrate the whole depth of the bricks.

Site 3-Slab Work

A reinforced cement concrete slab is a common structural element

of modern buildings, consisting of a flat, horizontal surface made of
cast concrete. Steel-reinforced slabs, typically between 100 and 500
mm thick, are most often used to construct floors and ceilings,
while thinner mud slabs may be used for exterior paving.

Department of Civil Engineering 21

• Grade of concrete: M30 column, M25 for slab and beam.
• Grade of steel: Fe 550D
• Stirrups spacing in beams: - 150 mm C/C
• Midspan spacing: - 175 mm C/C

Conclusion
Under the guidance of Er. Raghavendra G N as a mentor. We have got opportunity
to understand the technical and managerial aspect of residential housing project.

 The main aim of studies within this project was to investigate how a structure is
constructed within its desired properties.

We got to know about the basic & advanced techniques of building construction as
well as saw the challenges which a civil engineer has to face during construction i.e.
labor problems, cost management, environmental challenges etc. we cleared our many
doubts regarding building construction.

Department of Civil Engineering 27

Overall, it must be said that the construction methods and quality control on a

residential project needs a very good coordination and large quantities of

manpower, equipment and funds.
