Cams 3
DEFINITION
• A CAM is a device which converts rotary
motion into linear motion or vice-versa.
• A CAM MECHANISM usually consists of
TWO moving elements, the cam and the
follower, mounted on a fixed frame.
3
COMPONENTS
Elements of a cam mechanism
include:
• A driver known as the CAM
• A driven component known as
the FOLLOWER
• A frame that supports the cam
and guide the follower
4
TYPES OF CAMS
• Plate Cam
• Face Cam
• Cylindrical or Drum Cam
5
PLATE CAM
• Also known as a disc, radial, or
edge cam.
• Consists of a flat plate or disc
with an edge profile to transmit
motion.
6
FACE CAM
• Has a groove cut on the face of
the rotating body where the
follower rides and transmits the
motion.
7
CYLINDRICAL CAM
• Sometimes called a drum cam
or barrel cam.
• The follower is contained along
the grooved machined on the
cylindrical surface.
8
TYPES OF FOLLOWERS
• Flat follower
• Point or Knife-edge follower
• Roller follower
• Offset follower

DISPLACEMENT DIAGRAM
• A graph which plots the movement of a cam follower
against time or length of cam operation
• Represented by equal distances along the horizontal axis
and the resulting follower motion along the vertical axis.
• The follower may have periods of rest, or DWELL.
• It may be required to experience a SUDDEN DROP down
to a lower position. (Vertical line on the graph)
17
CONSTANT VELOCITY
• The follower simply rises or falls
from one position to another at a
constant speed
• (i.e. it travels the same distance
during equal time intervals):
• it is represented by a straight line on
the graph as shown.
20
CYCLOIDAL MOTION
• This is the curve of fastest descent
under gravity: it can be represented on
the graph by drawing a cycloid
• (i.e. the curve traced by a point on the
rim of a circular wheel as the wheel
rolls along a straight line without
slippage) .
