Unit 1
MAP TERMINOLOGY AND MAP SYMBOLS
 Map symbols
- A picture or representation of the earth’s surface. It shows how places are related to each
other in distance, direction and size.
- Symbols on maps means to interpret the information on the map.
Scale

 Represent the ration of a distance on the map to the actual distance on the ground.
 Maps have or a relationship of a line scale.
 A ratio of scale of 1:50,000 means that one centimeter on the map represents 50,000 cm,
which is in really 0.5 km.
Distance indicators

 Show the distance between places on the routes.

 Direction
- Is a way of describing the position of one place in relation to another.
Terminology relevant to time zones

 Latitude and Leg Degrees: the time zone map has longitude lines numbered at 15° intervals.
 The 0° line of longitude is called the Greenwich meridian, because it runs through Greenwich,
London. (divides earth into eastern and western hemispheres or hemispheres.
 All meridians run from the North Pole to the South Pole and divide the Earth into 24 time
zones.
 Lines of latitude run parallel to the equator, which is the 0˚ line of latitude.
 The equator divides the earth into northern and southern hemisphere
 Grid reference:
- To located a place or features on a map
 Universal time coordinate (UTC)
The earth is divided into time zones by lines of longitude.
- Every 15° of the longitude system is equal to one hour.
- The time zone of a country IS CALCULATED IN RELATION TO THE MORE UNIVERSAL
TIME COORDINATE OR UTC. (ALSO KNOWN AS GREENWICH MEAN TIME – GMT)
- UTC IS BASED ON THE LOCAL STANDERD TIME OF 0° - MERIDIAN THAT RUNS
THROUGH THE GREENWICH.
- MIDNIGHT IN GREENWICH IS KNOWN AS 00:00 UTK AND HIGH NOON AS 12:00 UTC
 THE TIME IN LANDS EAST OF THE GREENWICH MERDIAN (0°) HAS TIMES THAT ARE LATER THAN UTK.
 FOR EXAMPLE: CAPE TOWN, LOCATED AT 30° EAST'S TIME HOURS EARLIER THAN THAT OF LONDON AT
0°.
 THE TIME IN CAPE TOWN IS REFERRED TO AS UTC+2.
 FOR EXAMPLE, IF IT IS 12:00 IN LONDON (0°), IT IS 14:00 IN Cape Town.
 Lands west of the Greenwich meridian have times earlier U.K.
 For example: if it is 12:00 p.m. in London will be five hours earlier in New York (75° W). So the time in upstate New York
will be 7:00 a.m.
 The time of a country is based on the line of longitude that runs through its middle.
 South African Standard Time (SAT) is determined by the 30° 0 spring grade.
 For example, America has four time zones because it spans 60 lines of longitude and every 15° interval is equal to one hour.
International date line (IDL)

 The idl is an imaginary line on the Earth's surface at the 180°

 East of the idl, the time is one day earlier than on the west side of it.
 If the idl crosses from the east, you move one day BACK (lose one day).
 For example: on a Tuesday flying west from the U.S. to Japan, it's suddenly Wednesday
when you cross the idl.
 If you're leaving Japan on a Monday morning to fly east, it's suddenly Sunday when you
cross the idl.
