Circles
What we are aiming to achieve in today’s lesson.

Must: use in calculations

Should: work out the area of a circle
Could: work out the area of fractions
of a circle

Literacy Objective: to know what the circumference is.

Area of a circle
Area of a parallelogram = Height x Width

Area = Height x Width

Area =

Area =

r
Therefore, the area of a circle =
1
× 𝜋 ×2 𝑟
2

Should: work out the area of a circle
Could: work out the area of fractions of a circle
Area of a circle - example
• What is the area of a circle with radius
4cm?
• Area of a circle = r² 
4c
m • You square the radius and then times by 
• Area = 4² x 
= 16 x 
= 50.2654824574
= 50.3 to 1 d.p
= 50.3cm²

Should: work out the area of a circle
Could: work out the area of fractions of a circle
Area of a circle - example
• What is the area of a circle with diameter
16cm?
• Radius = 16 ÷ 2
= 8cm
• Area = 8² x  16
cm
= 64 x 
= 201.06192983
= 201.1 to 1 d.p
= 201.1cm²

Could: work out the area of fractions of a circle
Area of a fraction of a circle
• What is the area of a sector of a circle with
radius 5cm?
• Find the area of a whole circle with radius 5cm
• Area = 5² x 
5c
= 25 x  m
= 78.53981634
• Identify how much of the whole circle is there. In
this question because we are missing
• Multiply the are of the whole circle by the fraction
• 78.53981634
• Area = 58.90cm2 (2.d.p)
