1. Parallel Structure should be used when elements are joined by coordinating conjunctions.
FANBOYS- for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so. These are coordinating conjunction words.
2. Parallel Structure should be used when writing elements in the form of a list or a series.
Incorrect: The class valued respect, honesty, and being on time in a teacher.
Correct: The class valued respect, honesty, and promptness in a teacher.
Example:
“I like to jog, bake, paint, and watch movies.”
or
“I like to jog, bake, paint, and watching movies”
Three rules to consider when checking for

WHAT IS PARALLEL
NON-STRUCTURE?
• structure is when you use different ways.
• it occurs when elements in the sentence are not expressed
using the same patterns and/or parts of speech.
• also called faulty parallel structure, is when the list is
incorrectly written—when the items are not written in the
same way and don't "match."

Non-parallel: We enjoy reading novels, collecting stamps, and to play
tennis.
Correct: We enjoy reading novels, collecting stamps, and playing tennis.
EXAMPLES
Non-parallel: The celebrity was charming, witty, and a beauty.
Correct: The celebrity was charming, witty, and beautiful.
EXAMPLES
Non-parallel: Her aims were to study, to travel, and someday having a
family.
Parallel: Her aims were to study, to travel, and to have a family.
EXAMPLES
Non-parallel: What we say and the things that we do are never quite the
same.
Parallel: What we say and what we do are never quite the same.
ACTIVITY
• Read each sentence below carefully.
• Identify the parts of the sentence that are not parallel.
• Rewrite the sentence to make the parts parallel.
• Write your corrected sentence on a separate sheet of paper.
• Pair up with a classmate and take turns sharing your corrected
sentences. Explain why you made the corrections you did.

Example:
Non-parallel: She likes to swim, running, and plays basketball. Corrected: She likes
to swim, run, and play basketball.
Sentences to correct:

skills.
