INTRODUCTION
• First Shifting properties
• Second Shifting properties
• Its Applications
Definition of 1st Shifting property
• A Laplace transform which is a constant multiplied by a function has an
inverse of the constant multiplied by the inverse of the function. First shift
theorem: L − 1 { F ( s − a ) } = e a t f ( t ) , where f(t) is the inverse
transform of F(s).
Formula
If L{f(t)}=F(s) when s>a then,

L{eatf(t)}=F(s−a)

In words, the substitution s−a for s in the

transform corresponds to the multiplication of the
original function by eat.
Example:
Problem 01
Find the Laplace transform of f(t)=e2tt3
.

L(tn)=n!/sn+1+1
L(t3)=3!/s3+1
L(t3)=6/s4

Thus,
L(e2tt3)=6(s−2)4 answer
Example 2:
Find the Laplace transform of f(t)=e−5tsin3t.

Solution 02

L(sinbt)=b/s2+b2
L(sin3t)=3/s2+32
L(sin3t)=3/s2+9

Thus,
L(e−5tsin3t)=3/(s+5)2+9
L(e−5tsin3t)=3/(s2+10s+25)+9
L(e−5tsin3t)=3/s2+10s+34 answer
2nd Shifting Property
• Definition of 2nd Shifting property
• L − 1 { F ( s − a ) } = e a t f ( t ) , where f(t) is the inverse transform
of F(s). Second shift theorem: if the inverse transform numerator
contains an e–st term, we remove this term from the expression,
determine the inverse transform of what remains and then
substitute (t – T) for t in the result.
Formula

If L{f(t)}=F(s), and
g(t)={f(t−a)0t>at<a

then,
L{g(t)}=e−asF(s)
Example 1:
Find the Laplace transform of
g(t)={f(t−1)20t>1t<1

Let
z=t−1
t=z+1
dt=dz

when t=1,z=0
when t=∞,z=∞

L{g(t)}=∫∞0e−s(z+1)z2dz
L{g(t)}=∫∞0e−sz−sz2dz
L{g(t)}=∫∞0e−sze−sz2dz
L{g(t)}=e−s∫∞0e−szz2dz
L{g(t)}=e−sL(z2)
L{g(t)}=e−s(2s3)
L{g(t)}=2e−ss3 answer
