C.T SHOULD NOT BE

OPEN???
LOURENCE M. ESPALMADO
4E
HERE’S ARE SOME REASONS WHY THE
SECONDARY OF A CURRENT TRANSFORMER (C.T)
SHOULD NOT BE LEFT OPEN
• HIGH VOLTAGE BUILD-UP

- When the secondary of a C.T is left open, there is no path for the current to
flow, which can lead to a high voltage build-up across the secondary winding of
the C.T.
2. MAGNITIZING CURRENT
- When the secondary of a C.T is left open, there is no load on the secondary
winding, which can lead to a high magnetizing current flowing through the C.T.
3. INACCURATE MEASUREMENTS
- Inaccurate Measurements: Leaving the secondary of a C.T open can result in
inaccurate current measurements, as there is no load on the secondary winding to
produce a proportional current.
4. SAFETY HAZARD
- Leaving the secondary of a C.T open can create safety hazards for personnel
working on the circuit, as there is no path for the current to flow if there is a
fault in the primary circuit.

5. DAMAGE TO OTHER EQUIPMENTS

- Leaving the secondary of a C.T open can cause damage to other equipment
in the circuit, as there is no load on the secondary winding to limit the voltage
and current that flows through it.
WHAT IS POTENTIAL
TRANSFORMER?
• known as a voltage transformer

• a type of transformer that is used to reduce the

voltage of high voltage power systems down to a
level that is safe to measure and use.

• commonly used in power distribution systems,

industrial plants, substations, and electrical
testing laboratories.
