Measure of Central Tendency

MEAN of Ungrouped Data

Objectives:
• Restate the formula of the mean of ungrouped data.
• Solve the mean of the ungrouped data that they will
gather.
• Interpret carefully the computed mean.
Measure of Central Tendency

• A measure of central tendency locates the center of a set of data.

• Answers whether the scores are generally high or generally low.
The most common measures of central tendency
are:

• Mean
• Median
• Mode

n = sample size
N = population size
• The Mean – is the most popular among the measures of central tendency for it is
widely used. It is also called the average of a set of n numbers and it is the sum of all
numbers divided by n.

The Mean of Ungrouped Data:

formula: =

And for the population mean, it is

µ=
Where:
= mean,
Σx = summation of x or sum of scores in distribution,
n = number of scores in the sample
N = number of scores in the population
Example 1:
Ten students got the following grade in Mathematics of
Grade 6: 83, 70, 95, 90, 88, 96, 90, 90, 75 and 85. Find the mean.

= =
=
= 86.2
The average grade of ten students in Mathematics 6 is 86.2.
Example 2:
The ages of five contestants in a Statistics Quiz Bee are the following: 18, 17,
18, 19, and 18. Find their average age.
= =
=
= 18
Thus, the average age of five contestants is 18.
The Weighted Mean
The weighted mean of the n numbers with the respective assigned weights is

=
where:
Σ(x∙w) – is the sum of the products formed by multiplying each
number by its assigned weight,
Σw – is the sum of all weights.
Example 4:
Jo-Ann wants to determine the average grade of Angeline in
Filipino, Mathematics, English, P.E and Science which received a
corresponding grade of 88, 95, 98, 94 and 86 with weights of 1.3, 1.9, 1.5,
1.1 and 1.6 respectively. What is Angeline’s average grade?
Grades: 88, 95, 98, 94 and 86
Weights: 1.3, 1.9, 1.5, 1.1, 1.6

1. Solve the mean of each subject.

2. Compare the mean of each subject
a. What subject does the class perform best?
b. What subject does the class perform least?
3. Interpret your data by making a conclusion.
