PRAYER
Dear Lord and Father of all, thank you for
today. Thank you for ways I which you provide
for us all. For YOUR protection and love we
thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on
what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and
write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover
more about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

MEASURES
OF
CENTRAL
TENDENCY
At the end of the lesson (90-minute
period), 80% of the student should be
able to:
define the mean, median and mode.
find the mean, median and mode of a statistical
data; and
show appreciation to the value of mean, median
and mode in real life situation
ACTIVITY 1
Direction:
Recall your score in your term exams (either -
prelim, midterm or semi-final) with your assigned
subject. The members of the group will list down all
the score and will answer the following questions
based on the acquired data. The group will decide if
they will have the prelim, midterm or semi-final
exam score.
(The group must use the same term exam on the assigned subject. For example, the group is
assigned in Math and they must all used prelim scores only or whatever they have decided.)
Questions:
1. What score is typical to the group of students? (For number
1, typical means usual or average. Try to compute the average of all your
scores. You can use your calculators for computing the average.)
2. What score appears to be in the middle? (For number 2, the
scores must be arranged in ascending order, the question is what score
appears in the middle or what score is the middle?)
3. What score frequently appears? (For number 3, what score
frequently appears? Or what is the most common value? Or the most
frequently occurring value or case.)
ACTIVITY 2: MATCH ME
Direction:
Observe the pictures in Column A and
match the questions that it relates to
Column B. Given the pair of answer
connect it to Column C for its main idea or
term that describes it.
COLUMN A COLUMN B COLUMN C
1.

What score is
TYPICAL to the group MEDIAN
of students
2.

What score appears to MODE

be in the MIDDLE?

3.

What score
FREQUENTLY MEAN
appears?
DEFINITION OF
TERMS
 Measures of Central Tendency - is a
descriptive statistic that describes the
average, or typical value of a set of scores

 There are three common measures of

central tendency:
The three common Measures of
Central Tendency are:

MEAN
MEDIAN

MODE
MEAN - average of the data set.

MEDIAN- middle term of the data.

MODE- most frequent occurring value
in the data.
MEAN
• It is often called the average, of a numerical set of
data, is simply the sum of the data values divided
by the number of values. The mean is the balance
point of a distribution.

• the arithmetic average of all the scores

(X)/N
When To Use the Mean
 You should use the mean when the data are
interval or ratio scaled

 The mean is preferred because it is sensitive

to every score
 If you change one score in the data set,
the mean will change
Calculating the Mean
 Calculate the mean of the following data:
1 5 4 3 2
 Sum the scores (X):
1 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 15
 Divide the sum (X): = 15) by the number of scores (N
= 5):
15 / 5 = 3
 Mean = X = 3
MEDIAN
• The median is the number that falls in the middle
position once the data has been organized.

• The number that divides the

distribution of scores in half
When To Use the Median
 The median is often used when the distribution of
scores is either positively or negatively skewed
 The few really large scores (positively
skewed) or really small scores (negatively
skewed) will not overly influence the median
Calculating the Median
 Arranged the data ( highest to lowest or lowest
to highest)
 Find the score in the middle
 Position of the Middle =( N+1) /2
 If N, the number of scores, is even
the median is the average of the
middle two scores
Calculating the Median
 What is the median of the following scores:
24 18 19 42 16 12
 Sort the scores:
42 24 19 18 16 12
 Determine the middle score:
middle = (N + 1) / 2 = (6 + 1) / 2 = 3.5
 Median = average of 3rd and 4th scores:
(19 + 18) / 2 = 18.5
Calculating the Median
 What is the median of the following scores:
10 8 14 15 7 3 3 8 12 10 9
 Sort the scores:
15 14 12 10 10 9 8 8 7 3 3
 Determine the middle score:
middle = (N + 1) / 2 = (11 + 1) / 2 = 6
Median = 6th position = 9
MODE
• The mode of a set of data is simply the
value that appears most frequently in the
set
• If two or more values appear with the same
frequency, each is a mode.
• That is a set of data may have no mode, or
it may have more than one mode.
MODE
• The word modal is often used when
referring to the mode of a data set.
• UNIMODAL - one mode
• BIMODAL- two mode
• MULTIMODAL - more than two
mode
Determining the Mode
When determining the mode of a
data set, calculations are not
required, but keen observation is
a must.
Determining the
Mode
The most
frequently
occurring score
(mode) is
Vanilla.
INTEGRATION
ACTIVITY 3. ANSWER ME! WRITE ME!
Directions: Choose 2 representatives to get
the questions in front. Representatives will
only be given 1 minute to see the question
and must memorize the data in order for the
group to answer the question.
As soon as the group finished answering,
another representative will go in front and
write the answer with a solution on the
board. The group who got the correct
answer faster will be given 5 points. The
same process for another set of question will
be followed.
TIMER
PROBLEMS AND

ANSWERS
1. Stephen has been working on programing
and updating a Web site for his company for
the past 15 months. The following numbers
represent the number of hours Stephen has
worked on this Web site for each of the past
7 months:
24, 25, 31, 50, 53, 66, 78
What is the mean (average) number of
hours that Stephen worked on this Web site
each month?
PROBLEM 1
Step 1: Add the numbers to determine the total
number of hours he worked.

24 + 25 + 31 + 50 + 53 + 66 + 78 = 327

Step 2: Divide the total by the number of

months.

= mean
2. Find the median of the following
data:

12, 2, 16, 8, 14, 10, 6

PROBLEM 2
Step 1: Organize the data, or arrange the numbers from smallest
to largest. 2, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Step 2: Since the number of data values is odd, the median will be
found in the n plus 1 over 2 position.

Step 3: In this case, the median is the value that is found in the
fourth position of the organized data.

2, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 ----- 10= median

3. The ages of 12 randomly selected
customers at a local Best Buy are
listed below:
23, 21, 29, 24, 31, 21, 27, 23, 24, 32,
33, 19
What is the mode of the above ages?
PROBLEM 3

The above data set has three values that each

occur with a frequency of 2. These values are
21, 23, and 24. All other values occur only
once. Therefore, this set of data has three
modes.
○What is Mean? Median?
Mode?
○What do you call of these
three measures?
MEASURES
OF
CENTRAL
TENDENCY
MEAN - average of the data set.

MEDIAN- middle term of the data.

MODE- most frequent occurring value
in the data.
Answer the following question in
your activity notebook. (at least 5
sentences.)
1. What is the importance of The
Measures of Central Tendency,
particularly in your program that will
contribute to life-long learning as one of
DMCCFI core values?
Be a median in a world
full of extreme values.
– Nikki B. Lucero
Median is not affected by extreme values. In life,
living in judge-mental society, we should act like
a median, not affected by extreme values or
judgments of other people. One of the 7 cardinal
rules in life, in order for us to be happy is what
others think of us is none of our business. What
matters is what we think of ourselves, knowing
that we are always doing the right thing or we are
on the right path.
EVALUATI

Activity 3. Find the mean, median and
mode of the following statistical data.

145, 136, 140, 150, 134, 129, 126, 130
