UNIT-I
INTRODUCTION

A Prelude:
And just what is Geology?
Geology; Physics, chemistry, mathematics, zoology,
botany, construction, mining and other engineering.
Geology «The history of the earth, its combination of
rock, soil and water, and the science of studying
evolution»
Geological Engineering: Provides the use of
geological data for practical engineering purposes.
Engineering Geology I

Definition:-
 The science which deals with the physical structure and
substance of the earth, their history, and the processes which
acton them.
 The geological features of a district.
 The geological features of a planetary body
• The importance of geology in civil engineering may briefly as
follows:
• Geology provides a systematic knowledge of construction
material, its occurrence, composition, durability and other
properties. Example of such construction material is building
stones, road metal, clay, lime stones and laetrile.
 The knowledge of the geological work of natural agencies
such as water, wind, ice and earthquakes helps in
planning and carrying out major civil engineering works.
For example the knowledge of erosion, transportation and
deposition helps greatly in solving the expensive
problems of river control, coastal and soil conservation.
Engineering geology and Civil Engineering

The importance of engineering Geology in civil engineering projects are as

follows:
1. Systematic knowledge about the source of rocks, soil and sediment for its use as
construction material.
2. Geological conditions evaluation for construction of dams, tunnels, bridges,
railways, highways, pipeline and multistoried buildings.
3. Complete knowledge about the exploration of surface and underground water
resources, assessment of quality of groundwater and groundwater basin
management.
4. The evaluation of geological hazards such as landslides, earthquake and
volcanoes.
5. Interpretation of geological maps, topographic maps, hydrologic maps and their
sections which are needed for planning engineering projects.
6. The knowledge of surface water, erosion, transportation and deposition of
sediment/soil by the action of river and soil conservation.
7. Preliminary geological survey of the area before carrying out engineering
projects.
The relationship between Geological
Engineering and other engineering sciences
 CivilEngineering (safe and economical
construction of buildings)
 Mining Engineering (safety and economical
fact or sin mining deposition operating and
development)
 PetroleumEngineering(Economic design for
extracting petroleum and obtaining petroleum
products)
 Geophysical Engineering (earth physical
properties and its engineering applications)
 Architecture (project designing)
 City and Regional Planners
 General geology  Oredeposits -Geochemistry
 Structural geology  Mineral deposits
 Sedimantology-  Geochemistry
