Singing songs or chants related to the story or poem to be used in the actual
reading, predicting the text, playing games, using flash cards to highlight words or
syllables, segmenting onset, and rimes, picture-word association, word classification
game, repeating after me, picture reading, taking pictures, listening to an audio
recording, or watching a video about the story or poem. Before actual reading, the
teacher chooses an appropriate excerpt from the chosen storybook or poem
and then raises motivational questions to elicit responses.

Teacher Ela is kind-hearted. One day, she saw her pupil
named Bert crying outside the classroom. The teacher
found out that the child was being teased by his
classmates. The teacher talked to the whole class.

Afterwards, the students admitted that they hurt and teased


their classmate with a different skin color. The teacher
explained that they are all equal in the eyes of God, that they
should be the first to understand and respect their classmates.

Their classmates apologized to Bert and they did not


do it again. Bert became happy because he became
friends with his classmates.

A Day in Our Garden

Guide on how to involve kids in picture
reading?
Pictures may be chosen from story books or magazines or newspapers or random ones from the internet.
Show the picture and ask questions like:
1. What do you see in the picture?
2. What do you think about the picture?
3. If it’s an object, you can ask about what your child thinks about the colour, shape, material, etc…
4. If there is a person in the picture, you can ask, “What do you think? Is it a
boy/girl/woman/women/man/men/grandfather, etc.
5. Ask about the dress they are wearing.
6. “What are they saying/thinking/doing?”
7. “Where do you think they are going?”
8. What would you do if you were in that picture?
9. Why do you think so?
10. When do you think this is happening?
11. How do you think he/she went there?
