Congratulating
• Congratulation is the expression to represent
the happiness of seeing someone's
achievement.
• The culture of Indonesian and foreigner in
giving response to the expression of
congratulation is different. Indonesian usually
tend not to accept it directly. They will try to
refuse it in a good purpose.
Compliment
● Compliment is an expression used to
express our praise to someone.
● It is used by us every time we find something
good of someone to make him or her happy
and improve his or her performance.
● Generic Structure
● The structure of compliment expression is:
a.) Expression The beginning of expression (in
this case, in the dialogue). For example: How
beautiful your new hair is!
b.)Response The feed back of the expression.
For example: Thank you for saying so.
Compliment
The principal topics for complimenting typically fall under
four main categories:
1. Appearance: You look great. / That’s a nice haircut!
2. Skills/Performance: You have a great eye finding those
discrepancies. / I appreciate your ability to get things done
on time.
3. Possessions: Nice phone! / You have such a nice
apartment.
4. Personality: You are so generous. / I like how motivated
you are!
Structure of compliment
1. Noun phrase + is/looks (really) + adjective 6. You have a/an + (really) + adjective + noun
Example: Your watch is really nice. phrase
2. I (really) like/love + noun phrase Example: You have a great sense of humor.
Example: I love your project idea. 7. What a/an + adjective + noun phrase
3. Pronoun + is (really) a/an + adjective + noun Example: What a nice pair of shoes!

Example: You write reports really well.
Make a compliment based on the following situation
● You compliment someone on the appearance
● You say nice about your friend’s dress
● Your college is very fashionable and well dressed
● Your friend has just passed an important exam
● Your brother has gotten an award
● You thank your friend for their compliment
● You see a boy who is good at playing guitar
● Your best friend has got a giveaway prize
