CONSTRUCTION

SAFETY GROUP 3
Introduction:
CONSTRUCTION and CONSTRUCTION SITE

1. What is Construction in 2. What is a Construction Site?

Engineering?
A construction site is an area or piece of land where construction work is taking place.
It involves the design, development Sometimes construction sites are referred to as ‘building sites’. This usually implies that
and supervision of a city or region's buildings or houses are being constructed, whereas ‘construction site’ covers a wider scope
buildings, roads and power supplies. It of work. This could refer to anything from a house extension to a landscaping project, road
deals with any type of infrastructure, or bridge construction or a huge engineering project, such as the Crossrail development or
including roads, railroads, bridges, the creation of a new power station
tunnels, facilities, airports, ports, dams
and other utilities.
Construction safety involves any safety
procedure that is related to the construction
industry or construction sites. Construction
safety aims to ensure that a construction site o

required safety standards.

Importance of CONSTRUCTION SAFETY

The main importance of construction safety, is it lessen the

number of safety hazards and incidents. The reason for
considering safety include:
• HUMANITARIAN CONCERN
• ECONOMIC REASON
Humanitarian Concern

When the accident happens, the resulting

suffering of the injured workers and their
families is difficult to quantify n economic
terms. The contractor should never ignore if
has insurance against accidents.
Economic Reasons

Even if a contractor has insurance, he will

find out that the cost of accidents will come
out of his own pocket through an increase in
increase premiums. In addition, there are
other indirect costs that result from
accidents. The Direct and Indirect Cost of
accidents can be

Safety Officer

an individual responsible for ensuring

compliance with occupational health and
safety (OHS) guidelines in a workplace
ROLE OF SAFETY OFFICER

01
Worker safety and health must be considered as
occupational value

02
Fully determined to prevent accidents, protect workers and
completely improve safety and health culture.
ROLE OF SAFETY OFFICER

03
Sufficient resources must be provided to implement
and maintain safety and health of employees

04
Proper medical kits must be installed at several locations as per
worker density. Site safety equipment such as fire extinguishers
and water cannons can also be put on site
ROLE OF SAFETY OFFICER

05
Accessible toilet spaces should also be provided on site to avoid
workers getting worked up due to sanitary issues.
Safety Management

is an organizational function, which ensures

that all safety risks have been identified,
assessed and satisfactorily mitigated
ROLE OF SAFETY MANAGEMENT

01
To setup a strong foundation by suitable staffing of

WHO IS AT RISK?
What to do when
accident happen?

If you or someone you care

about suffers a construction
accident, the following
steps can help minimize
negative ramifications:
Approaches to Improve Safety
Recognizing the importance of safety
performance, a contractor can approaches
the problem in four different ways:

1.Organizational Approach
2. Physical Approach
3. Behavior Approach
4. Economic Approach
ORGANIZATIONAL APPROACH
Organizational Approach
-A safety programme cannot be successful without an
appropriate organizational setup.

Safety Department
-A formal safety department is essential in a company. This
department should be incharge of the safety and jobsite.

Committee
-A safety committee should be set up to guide the operation of
safety programs.
ORGANIZATIONAL APPROACH
Field Procedures
-A system must be designed to process safety suggestions from wokers, the
people who carries out the daily construction process

Incentives
-Field management and supervisor should be evaluated for promotions and
salary increases in terms of safety record as well as productivity and cost.

Safety Cost
-The cost of accounting system should be adjusted to encouraged safety by
allocating safety cost
PHYSICAL APPROACH
In Physical Aspects, a contractor can improve safety performance using ff.
guidelines.

-New workers should be given a safety orientation

-For every project the contractor must study in advance the possible
accidents that proposed construction method

-The contractor should enforced the use of approved equipment for

personal
PHYSICAL APPROACH
-The contractor should integrate safety programmes with other
programmes, such as scheduling and budgeting during preplanning
procedure

-Periodic checking of tools and equipment

-Conduct periodic safety meetings

-Seek and obtain full cooperation from all subcontractors

BEHAVIOR APPROACH

Studies conducted disclose that more than 80% of all

accidents result from workers unsafe or improper
procedure. Apparently, this is the most potential for
improving safety performance. Also, the behavior of
managers on every level has significantly influence
on workers safety performance.
ECONOMIC APPROACH
-Owners as well as contractors should always bear in mind and take into
consideration the economic benefits due to safety at the worksite.

-If a complete estimate should be taken into account for the cost of their safety
programme as percentage of direct field labour costs, their estimate would result in
some positive return for the amount spent on safety programme.

-The contractor should also reward workers for good safety performance.

-This creates perseverance on their part to learn more, know, practice and strive
towards a high level of safety at the job site.
