There are three buoyage systems in use worldwide:

• IALA-A (worldwide at sea except where IALA-B applies)

• SIGNI (on European inland waterways)

Lateral buoyage

• This demarcates sailing routes.

• A buoyage direction is always assumed:


• From the sea into the harbour.
• Clockwise the continents.
• It is marked with an arrow on the nautical chart

Cardinal buoyage

• This demarcates hazards for navigation


• The buoys indicate the passing side of the danger and therefore also on which side you
have to pass the buoy of the buoy

• These passing sides are divided into four quadrants;


• North
• East
• South
• West

The topmarks are black and double

Separation of fairways ther are 2 manners:

Lateral Cardinal
Nav 2: IALA-A

Isolated Danger Buoy


Isolated danger: Black – Red
Not within the Dutch waters
Nav 2: IALA-A

Safe Fairway Buoy


• This buoy indicates that there is safe water around the buoy

• White = Safe
• The buoy is applied to;
• indicate the middle of a waterway
• represent the deepest part of a fairway
• indicate an approach position
