b. Calculate the sum of the first ninthterms in the sequence. .
Solution:
Known, U2= 6 U6 = 96
U6= a x r5
U2= a x r 96= a x r5 …. (2)
6 = a x r ……

Example 3
The length of some ropes forms a geometric series. The smallest
rope in the series is 5 cm and the largest is 1280 cm. if the
length all of ropes are 17,05 m.
Find the number of the pieces of rope
Solution:
Known, a = 5 cm, Un = 1280 cm, Sn = 1705 cm
Un = arn-1 256 = (r)n-1
1280 = 5(r)n-1 28 = (r)n-1
5 9=n
r=2 n = 9 subtitute to the formula
geometric series for cheking
Sn = a ( 1 − r n ) 256 = (r)n-1
(1 - r ) 44 = (r)n-1
S9 = 5 ( 1 − 2 9 ) if r=4 then 4 = n-1
(1 - 2)
4 +1 = n
S9 = 5 ( 1 − 512 )
5=n
(- 1)
S9 = 5 ( − 511 )
(- 1)
S9 = 5 (511 )
S9 = 5 (511 ) = 2555 x
r=4 n = 5 subtitute to the formula
geometric series for cheking
Sn = a ( 1 − r n )
(1 - r )
S5 = 5 ( 1 − 4 5 )
(1 - 4)
S5 = 5 ( 1 − 1024 )
(- 3)
S5 = 5 ( − 1023 )
(- 3)
S5 = 5 (341 )
S5 = 1705 So, there are 5 pieces of ropes

Example 3
A rope is divided to 6 pieces. The length of 6 Pieces of rope
forms a geometric series. The smallest rope in the series is 2 cm
and the largest is 486 cm. Find the length rope before cut
Solution:
Known, a = 2 cm, U6 = 486 cm, S6 = ….
Un = arn-1 243 = (r)5
486 = 2 X (r)6-1 35 = (r)5
486 = (r)5

Sn = a ( 1 − r n )
(1 - r )
S6 = 2 ( 1 − 3 6 )
(1 - 3)
S6 = 2 ( 1 − 729 )
(1 - 3)
S6 = 2 ( − 728 )
(-2)
S6 = 728
