INTRODUCTION

Generally, windmills only produce

mechanical power of their tasks like
plumbing or granting of water.
Windmills are connected to a generator
for electricity generation. The first
underwater windmill was invented by
Charles F Brush to generate electric
energy.
Underwater windmills are used to extract
energy from the water flow of oceans.
Underwater windmills can also be called as
Tidal stream turbines. They use kinetic energy
of the moving water as wind blades use moving
air. The principal of an underwater windmill is
same as the usual windmill.
OPERATION PRINCIPLE

• In simple a underwater windmill consists of a number of

blades mounted on a hub (together known as the rotor), a
gearbox and a generator.
• The hydrodynamic effect of the flowing water past the
blades causes the rotor to rotate, thus turning the generator
to which the rotor is connected via a gearbox.
• The gearbox is used to convert the rotational speed of the
rotor shaft to the desired output speed of the generator shaft.
• The electricity generated is transmitted to land through
cables.
WORKING

• Underwater turbines are a fairly straight forward

concept, as far as cutting edge energy technology
goes.
• They are essential windmills installed onto an
ocean floor or river bed.
• The under water current produced by the tides spins
blades arranged like an airplane propeller.
• These turbines are attached to a gearbox, which is
connected to an electrical generator.
• This produces the electricity that is carried by a
cable to shore.
ADVANTAGES

• Less maintenance and gives more lifetime.

• The underwater windmill uses Tidal energy and
this is a clean and renewable energy source.
• Decrease the dependence on fossil fuels.
• It has less impact on the environment impact.
• Running cost is less.
DISADVANTAGES

• The initial cost is very high.

• Installation underwater is very difficult.
• To avoid the corrosion of the blade, it
must be coated.
• Damages habitat up to 500m away.
• Difficult to maintain.

Are underwater turbines the next big
clean energy source?

• The US Department of Energy is looking underwater for

the next significant renewable energy source.
• The agency is exploring the potential of underwater
turbines by funding 11 projects designed to harness the
power of moving water in rivers and oceans.
• These turbines could significantly boost renewable
energy and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The US Department of Energy (DoE) is set to
explore the potential of underwater turbines
with the hopes of making them more efficient
and cost-effective. If successful, the department
could lead to a significant shift in how we
generate electricity and help move the world
closer to a clean energy future. However, some
challenges must be overcome before underwater
turbines become a reality.
CONCLUSION

• Tides play a very important role in the formation of

global climate as well as the ecosystems for ocean
habitants.
• At the same time, tides are a substantial potential
source of clean renewable energy for future human
generations.
• Tidal energy is one of the best candidates for this
approaching revolution.
