COMMON DENOMINATORS IN MY GROUP

•Finally compare the list of your group

with those of the other groups. Find
out the common denominators in your
class.
COMMON DENOMINATORS IN MY CLASS

•What is the general common

denominator in your class? What
factors is the least common
denominators?
TAKING OFF:
• Based on the answers that you have gathered in the preceding
activity, you must have noticed two facts-people have both
similarities and differences.
• Observed your surrounding. What do you see? Most likely,
you would see people with different faces, fashion statements,
mannerisms, and more. These cultural validations are the
building blocks of a person’s identity. These are what make a
person unique, and a group of people diverse, colorful, and
interesting.
As a whole, people make up a society.
It is a group where different significant
phenomena happen. It has forces which
can generally make or break a person’s
life, such as gender, socioeconomic
class, and interests.
The complexity of humans and
societies and the way they exist have
brought scholars into nonquantifiable
studies. It is for the reason that
anthropology, sociology, and political
science have been born.
ANTHROPOLOGY
• Dubbed as the “science of humanity.” Anthropology is the
study of human beings, their origin, their societies, and their
cultures. It roots its observations to the origin of humans to
understand fully the societies and cultures of the human
organisms through time. It branches into two subdivisions:
social anthropology, which studies humans in relation to
societies; and cultural anthropology, or the study of human
cultures.
Through anthropology one can thoroughly
analyze the different phenomena that
happen in society. For example, when you
study Filipino culture, you may be able to
understand why many Filipinos love eating
balut or why bayanihan exists.
SOCIOLOGY
•It is significant for a person to learn about
his/her society. To co-exist with other people in
peace, one must first discover who he/she is,
who the co-members in society are, understand
the internal and external factors that contribute
to their personalities, and their functions in
society.
SOCIOLOGY is the scientific study of the society –
its origin, development networks, and functions. Its
primary purpose is to explain how different
elements in the environment affect and influence the
growth and the life of a person. The term was first
coined by French essayist Emmanuel Joseph Sleyes
in 1780 and was later defined by French philosopher
and father of Sociology Auguste Comte in 1838.
In studying society, being human or grounding your
arguments on your experiences is not enough. You
must look at society in a sociological perspective.
You must conceptually detach yourself from your
society so that you can observe it from an objective
point of view. Like what American sociologist
Richard Osborne ( 1996) advised, one must look at
society like an alien to avoid biases and prejudices.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
• Every society has a specific body which governs it –
the government. Like society, it is a complex institution
that has the power and authority to manage a large
number of people. One must have full knowledge of all
the processes related to the government before he/she
can become a part of it. For one to know much about
government, he/she must have knowledge of politics of
the science of governance.
The study of politics, its institutions and
processes is called political science. It
covers matters relating to the allocation
of power, the roles and systems of
governance, political behavior, and
public policies.
