SYSTEM
How many muscles are
there in the human
body?
A human body is made
up of 640 muscles. The
muscles make about 40%
of the body mass.
What is the longest
muscle in the human
body?
The Sartorius. It runs from
the outside of the hip,
down, and across to the
inside of the knee. It
twists and pulls the thigh
outwards.
What is the smallest
muscle in the body?
The Stapedius. It is
located deep in the
ear. It is only 5 mm
long and thinner
than cotton thread.
It is involved in
hearing.
What is the biggest
muscle in the
body?
The Gluteus Maximus.
It is located at the
buttock. It pulls the
leg backward
powerfully for walking
and running.
What is the strongest
muscle in the body?
The Masseter. It is
located from your
cheek bone to your
jaw and is the main
muscle of chewing.
Muscular System
The muscular system is composed of
specialized cells called muscle fibers. Their
predominant function is contractibility.
Muscles, attached to bones or internal
organs and blood vessels, are responsible
for movement. Nearly all movement in the
body is the result of muscle contraction.
FUNCTIONS
OF THE
and MUSCLES
The muscular system creates body heat
also moves the:
●
Bones of the Skeletal system
●
Food through Digestive system
● Blood through the Circulatory system
● Fluids through the Excretory system
FUNCTIONS

Movement
●
Maintenance of Posture and Muscle
Tone
● Protects the bones and internal organs.
MUSCLES
CLASSIFICATION
● FUNCTIONALLY
1. Voluntarily – can be moved
at will
2. Involuntarily - can’t be
moved intentionally
● STRUCTURALLY
1. Striated – have stripes across
the fiber
2. Smooth – no striations
TWO WAYS MUSCLE MOVE...
CONTRACTION
- the shortening of a
muscle
EXTENSION
- the stretching of a
muscle

TISSUES
Skeletal Muscle
are the striped, or striated, muscles attached
to bones that cause body movement.
They form the largest part of the body’s
muscular system.
There are more than 600 skeletal muscles.
Skeletal muscles are Voluntary muscles- the
person controls these muscles themselves.
HOW DO SKELETAL MUSCLE
MOVE? It happens when the muscular system and
the nervous system work together:
Somatic signals are sent from the
cerebral cortex to nerves associated with
specific skeletal muscles. Most signals
travel through spinal nerves that connect
with nerves that innervate skeletal
muscles throughout the body. Muscle
contraction begins when the nervous
system generates a signal.
CARDIAC MUSCLE
a special type of striated tissue
that forms the walls of the heart.
The heart is the most important
muscle in the body.
The heart can contract 100,000
per day to pump blood
throughout the body.
Cardiac muscles are involuntary
muscles
SMOOTH MUSCLE
● the type of muscle concerned
with the movement of internal
organs.
● They are also called involuntary
muscles, because they work
without a person’s control.
● Found in intestines, bladder, and
lungs.
COMMON
DISORDERS
AND
CONDITION
S
CARPAL TUNNEL
SYNDROME
which is also called median nerve
compression, occurs when the
tendons become inflamed,
causing compression of the
median nerve
MYASTHENIA
GRAVIS
a disorder in which the muscles
become weak and easily
fatigued.
The muscles most commonly
affected are the eye muscles.
MUSCULAR
DYSTROPHY
an inherited disorder where skeletal
muscles waste away.
There is no cure but early detection can
improve the quality of life by delaying
the muscle weakening through
exercise.
