Title: Prokaryote Cells vs.

Eukaryote Cells
Essential Question: How do I compare prokaryotic
and eukaryotic cells?
EQ: HOW DO I COMPARE CELLULAR
STRUCTURES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
IN PROKARYOTIC AND EUKARYOTIC
CELLS
CELL THEORY

• Cells are the basic units of living organisms.

• The cell theory states that:
–All living things are made of one or more cells.
–Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in
living things.
–All cells come from other cells.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL CELLS
• A surrounding membrane
• Cytoplasm – cell contents in thick fluid
• Organelles – structures for cell function
• Control center with DNA
CLASSIFICATION OF LIFE

Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
CELLS FALL INTO ONE OF TWO
CATEGORIES…

•Prokaryotes (prokaryotic)
or
•Eukaryotes (eukaryotic)
And that is it! Every organism on the planet can be put into one of
these two categories, including you!
Pro means NO!
PROKARYOTES:
• unicellular microorganisms
• lack a distinct nucleus
• lack membrane-bound organelles
• always bacteria!!!
• very simple and small
PROKARYOTES:
PROKARYOTE CELLS PARTS

• capsule: slimy outer

coating

• cell wall: tougher middle

layer

• cell membrane: delicate

inner skin
THE STRUCTURE OF BACTERIA
• Extremely small - 1–1.5 μm wide and 2–6 μm long
• Occur in three basic shapes:
– Spherical coccus,
– Rod-shaped bacillus,
– Spiral spirillum (if rigid) or spirochete (if flexible).

Eu means True
EUKARYOTES:
• unicellular or multicellular organisms
• have a nucleus
• have membrane-bound organelles
• LARGER and more complex (have more stuff
inside)
• Examples: animals, plants, fungi and protists
• NEVER BACTERIA!!!!
EUKARYOTES:

Or

Like the organs in

your body, each
organelle in the cell
performs a specific
function that helps
the cell maintain
homeostasis: a state
of balance.
EUKARYOTES:
Prokaryotes are much smaller than Eukaryotes

Prokaryote (Bacteria) Eukaryote (Animal Cell)

Prokaryote: Eukaryote:
• Lacks Nucleus • Has Nucleus
• Organelles Lack • Organelles have Membranes
Membranes • DNA is in the Nucleus
• DNA is free floating • Can be unicellular or multicellular
• Always unicellular • Plants, Animals, Fungi, Protists
• Always bacteria • Much Larger than Prokaryote
• Smaller than Eukaryote • Reproduction can be asexual (clones)
• Reproduction is asexual or sexual (variations)
(exact copies/clones)
