Human Activities

Objectives:
After going through this module, you are
expected to:
1.describe the effects of the Sun on the
activities of humans
2.identify the effects of the sun to living things;
and
3.practice precautions to prevent harmful
effects of the Sun.
Direction: Check (/) before the number if you agree with

1. Plants use sunlight in order to produce energy


through the process of photosynthesis.
2. Sunlight directly affects the survival of plants and
animals.
3. The sun’s heat is essential to some human activities
like drying clothes.
4. The sun provides energy through light radiation.
5. The sun helps in many ways, but not to plants and
animals.

Heat and Light
The harmful effects of the Sun to human

Everyone is at risk of the effects of sun exposure. It


doesn’t matter how old you are or what color your skin is.
Here are the following effects
:

1). Sun Damage to the eyes


Long unprotected exposure to
ultraviolet light from the sun can
damage the retina. (black part of
the eye.
2). Heat Exhaustion
It is the body’s responses to
excessive loss of water and
salt, usually through excessive
sweating
3)Heat Stroke
If heat exhaustion is left untreated,
it can lead to heat stroke. Heat
stroke is the most serious heat-
related illness and can be life-
threatening.
4)Sunburn
It is widely recognized as one of the
most common negative effects of too
much sun exposure. Ultraviolet light is
the cause of sunburn; redness of the
skin, swelling and a presence of
blisters.

5)Heat Rash
A heat rash is a skin rash that
occurs when sweat ducts trap
perspiration under the skin.
6). Skin Cancer
A long-term exposure to the sun will
cause the development of skin
cancer. Because the sun’s damage to
the skin develops over years.

7). Wrinkles/Aging
We associate wrinkles with
aging, but sun exposure is a
significant factor in the
development of wrinkles and
they appear early
The Effect of Heat to Animals and the Ways to
Protect them.

Be careful of soaking up your pets too much


under the sun, because excessive sun
exposure of animals can lead to conditions
including heatstroke,
sunburn and skin cancer. Fortunately, there are
ways to protect your cats or dogs from these
issues while still enjoying the sunshine
together. If your dog spends a lot of time
outdoors, you have to invest a protective shirt or
vest specifically designed for dogs.
Ways to Protect Yourself
1). Use sunscreen with a
Sun Protection Factor
(SPF) of at least 15. Make
sure it is water-resistant
and reapply every two
hours, especially after
swimming or sweating.
2). Apply sunscreen 30 minutes
before going outside so that your
skin has time to absorb it.

4)Wear protective clothing, like hats,


sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts and
pants.

5)Seek shade when possible,


especially during the hours of 10:00
am to 4:00 pm when the sun's rays
are strongest.
7)Protect children by
reapplying sun screen often
with an SPF 15, have them
play in the shade and wear
protective clothing.

8)Talk to your dermatologist


and have a complete body
scan once a year.
There are some ways of protecting ourselves
from the excessive sun’s heat and light.
1. Wear a cap or wide-brimmed hat during
sunny days.
2. Carry along an umbrella to protect you from
intense heat of the sun.
3. Wear sunglasses when playing on beaches
when the sun is too hot.
4. Apply sunscreen or lotion which protects your
skin from sunburn when you go for swimming.
5. Wear clothes which protect the skin of your
hand and feet while working under the heat of
the sun (like gardening, plowing, planting,
harvesting etc.)
6. Seek out the shade and avoid exposure during
hours of peak sunlight.
7. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
