Present Simple

or
Present Continuous

Mrs. Elsy Mejia

The main difference between the
present simple and present continuous
is in their use.

The present continuous indicates

actions that happen while we speak

•The present simple is used to

express habitual actions or
permanent situations.
I teach English. I am teaching English.

This is what I am doing at

This is my job. the moment. I am
teaching you English.
Another difference is
the formation of both
verb tenses:
• for the present simple we use the
verb in the present
• while for the present continuous we
use the auxiliary verb to be (is, am,
are) plus the gerund (ing) of the
corresponding verb.
For example:

Present simple: They live in the USA.

They are living in yhe USA.

Present continuous: I am studying for the

exams these days.
I study for the Exams these days.
What’s the difference?
They live in the USA.

means that they live in the USA all the

time. It is a permanent state.
What’s the difference?
I am studying for the exams these
days.

means that I am studying only these

several days. The action is taking
place only for a short period of time.
How do we form
PRESENT SIMPLE?
Subject + verb + complement/ rest of the
sentence
I
YOU HE
WE live SHE lives
THEY IT

I live in the USA.

She studies architecture.
The verb BE
Remember the forms of the verb BE for
the Present Simple tense:

I AM
HE,SHE, IT IS
WE, YOU, THEY ARE

I am a teacher and you are students.

Negative forms
For all verbs (EXCEPT BE) use:
DO/ DO NOT / DOESN’T
don’t
+ verb
doesn’t
I, WE, YOU, THEY- do not; don’t
HE, SHE, IT- does not; doesn’t|

I live in the USA.  I don’t live in the USA.

(do not)
She studies architecture.  She doesn’t study
architecture. (does not)
Negative BE

For the verb BE simply add the word

NOT after the verb

I am tired.  I am not tired.

She is rich.  She isn’t rich.
They are here.  They aren’t here.
Questions and short
answers
We form questions by putting auxiliary do or does
or any form of the verb BE before the subject:
Do you live in the USA? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
Does she study medicine? Yes, she does. / No, she
doesn’t.
Are they friends? Yes, they are. /No they aren’t.
Rixcy doesn’t cook.
