Caraga Region The gold jewelries are shown in the pictures below was originally found in Butuan ,a province found in the Caraga region Observe how intricate is the process of weaving thin threads of gold that the ancients of mastered. Caraga-is said to be originated from the word kalag that means ‘ ‘’spirit of the soul .The Caraga was legendary ,It was called the ‘’region de gente’’ animosa or region of spirited men.Currently Caraga is divided into 5 provinces: 1.Agusan del Norte 2.Agusan del Sur 3.Dinagat Islands 4.Surigao del Norte 5.Surigao del Sur and Butuan City. The people in the area believed that the gold accessories shown were probably worn by a powerful chieftain in the area during the early years .The golden sash is part of the Surigao Treasure. was also called hari or king .The artifact symbolizes The Butuan king’s divine power. 2.According to ancient beliefs ,The engrave curvilinear designs on headbands and facial covers look like a snake or dragon.This signifies the sea. which the early Filipinos has mastered navigating. It is as an artistic design of the Maranao native inhabitants of southern Philippines beginning from the early 6th Century C.E. before the Islamization of the area. Okir is a design or pattern often rendered or curved in hardwood, brass, silver and wall painting in curvilinear lines and Arabic geometric figures
The Okir Motif is an art depicting the
indigenious originality and skill of the Maranaos. It is a fine art of figuring, painting, curving and sculpturing depicting the social and psychological identity of Maranao Society. It is being patronized long time ago, until today and possibly in the coming generations of Maranao people. In the Caraga region the Cultural groups living in the area are called Manobos –they are great weavers and artisans.They make beads ,necklaces,baskets and other practical objects needed for daily living.The Manobos wear brightly colored attires and accessories .Even now they are firm in maintaining their customs and traditions . They are the largest indigenous groups occupying the province of Sarangani ,Surigao and Agusan. One of the oldest pre-Hispanic watercrafts found in the Philippines is known as the Balanghai or Balangay or the Butuan boat. One of the most intricate designs made by the early Filipinos is evident in the arts and architecture of the Maranaos .Their arts are still part of their current culture .Observe the Torogan or kin’s house designs below. Torogan house –(bahay lakan in Filipino)is a Maranao house. That symbolizes high social status It is a residence to a Sultan or datu .It is intricately engraved with the following geometries of the Maranao designs called Okir. A torogan (lit. 'resting place' or 'sleeping place') is a traditional ancestral house built by the Maranao people of Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines for the nobility.[1] A torogan was a symbol of high social status. Such a residence was once a home to a sultan or datu in the Maranao community. Nowadays, concrete houses are found all over Maranaw communities, but there remain torogans a hundred years old. The best-known are in Dayawan and Marawi City, and around Lake Lanao. Sarimanok –is legendary mythical bird of the Maranaos .It comes from the words sari and manok . Sari-means ‘’cloth or garment’’ with assorted colors .Manok – means chicken ‘’ It is shown through an image of a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail holding a fish on its beak. The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people who originate from Mindanao, a major island in the Philippines. It comes from the words “sari” and “manok.” “Sari” means cloth or garment, which is generally of assorted colors. Manòk, which makes up part of its name, is a Philippine word for chicken.The Sarimanok is derived from a totem bird of the Maranao people, called Itotoro. According to the Maranao people, the Itotoro is a medium to the spirit world via its unseen twin spirit bird called Inikadowa.
