OVERVIEW OF
WHAT MIS IS ALL
ABOUT
WHAT IS MIS? | MANAGEMENT
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Management Information Systems (MIS) is the study of people,
technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. MIS
professionals help firms realize maximum benefit from investment in
personnel, equipment, and business processes. MIS is a people-
oriented field with an emphasis on service through technology. If
you have an interest in technology and have the desire to use
technology to improve people’s lives, a degree in MIS may be for
you.
MIS PROFESSIONALS MAKE BUSINESS BETTER
•Businesses use information systems at all levels of operation to collect, process, and store data.
Management aggregates and disseminates this data in the form of information needed to carry out the
daily operations of business. Everyone who works in business, from someone who pays the bills to
the person who makes employment decisions, uses information systems. A car dealership could use a
computer database to keep track of which products sell best. A retail store might use a computer-
based information system to sell products over the Internet. In fact, many (if not most) businesses
concentrate on the alignment of MIS with business goals to achieve competitive advantage over other
businesses.

•MIS professionals create information systems for data management (i.e., storing, searching, and
analyzing data). In addition, they manage various information systems to meet the needs of managers,
staff and customers. By working collaboratively with various members of their work group, as well as
with their customers and clients, MIS professionals are able to play a key role in areas such as
information security, integration, and exchange. As an MIS major, you will learn to design,
implement, and use business information systems in innovative ways to increase the effectiveness and
efficiency of your company.
MORE THAN CODING
•A common misconception is that MIS only concerns coding (or writing computer code). While coding
concepts represent some of the fundamental principles of information systems development,
implementation, and use, many jobs in MIS do not utilize coding at all. A large portion of the MIS
degree focuses on data analysis, teamwork, leadership, project management, customer service, and
underlying business theories. These aspects of the degree are what set the MIS professional apart from
a computer science specialist.

•Do you enjoy working with people?

•Would you enjoy the chance to work on global problems with people from all over the world?
•Do you enjoy analyzing and solving problems?
•Do you want to create innovative, cutting-edge technology solutions?
•Do you want to learn how to make businesses more efficient, effective and competitive?
•Then you should consider as your major the field that is experiencing a critical shortage of
professionally trained individuals. A field where demand is skyrocketing with projected growth rates of
38 percent – the fastest of any business discipline (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
OBJECTIVES OF MIS
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF A MANAGEMENT INFORMATION
SYSTEM

DATA STORAGE - IT IS IMPORTANT TO STORE

INFORMATION OR PROCESSED DATA FOR FUTURE USE.

DATA RETRIEVAL - THE DATA SHOULD BE SMOOTHLY

RETRIEVED FROM STORAGE DEVICES WHENEVER
NEEDED BY DIFFERENT USERS.

DATA PROPAGATION - DATA SHOULD BE DISTRIBUTED

PERIODICALLY THROUGH THE ORGANIZATIONAL
NETWORK TO ITS USERS.
A SYSTEM OF EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE PLANNING - MIS CONTROLS
FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT TO PROVIDE QUICK AND TIMELY
INFORMATION TO THE MANAGEMENT. THE PROCESS IS VERY EFFECTIVE TO
MAKE DECISIONS. AN MIS'S GOALS ARE TO INCORPORATE THE COMPANY'S
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND PROCESSES IN ORDER TO BETTER
CONTROL THE ENTERPRISE AND MAXIMIZE THE INFORMATION SYSTEM'S
POTENTIAL FOR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE.

GRAPHICAL REPORTS - GIVE AN IDEA ABOUT THE

PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT RESOURCES
EMPLOYED IN THE ORGANIZATION.
CONTROLLING THE ORGANIZATION - MIS HELPS
CONTROL THE ORGANIZATION TO PROVIDE THE
LATEST INFORMATION AS WELL AS HISTORICAL DATA
WHENEVER REQUIRED.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF
MIS
1. System approach: - MIS follows the system approach, which implies a step by step
approach to the study of system and its performance in the light of the objective for which it
has been constituted. It means taking an inclusive view at sub-systems to operate within an
organization.
2. Management-oriented: - The management-oriented characteristic of MIS implies that top-
down approach needs to be followed for designing MIS. A top-down method says the
initiation of system development determines management requirements as well as business
goals. MIS implies the management dynamically to the system development towards the
completion of management decision.
3. As per requirements: - The design and development of MIS should be as per the
information required by the managers. The required design and development information is at
different levels, viz., strategic planning, management control and operational control. It
means MIS should cater to the specific needs of managers in the hierarchy of an organization.
4. Future-oriented: - The design and development of MIS should also be future purpose so that
the system is not restricted to provide only the past information.
5. Integrated: - A complete MIS is a combination of its multiple sub-components to provide the
relevant information to take out a useful decision. An integrated system, which blends information
from several operational areas, is a necessary characteristic of MIS.
6. Common data flows: - This concept supports numerous basic views of system analysis such as
avoiding duplication, combining similar functions and simplifying operations. The expansion of
common data flow is a cost-effectively and logical concept.
7. Long-term planning: - MIS should always develop as a long term planning because it involves
logical planning to get success of an organization. While developing MIS, the analyst should keep
future oriented analysis and needs of the company in mind.
8. Relevant connection of sub-system planning: - The MIS development should be decomposing
into its related sub-systems. These sub-systems must be meaningful with proper planning.
9. Central database: - it contains data in tabular form. The data base is responsible to operations
like insertion, deletion, updation of records. This database covers information related to inventory,
personnel, vendors, customers, etc. the data stored in the database.
ROLE OF MIS IN MY FIELD OF
THE
WORK
 “Data” is the lifeline of every educational institution. Right from the student turnover rate to
the financial records, every piece of data that is/was ever associated with the school paves
way for its development. The bigger the institution, the greater the volume of institutional
data, which makes it challenging to manage on paper or even with excel files.A Management
Information System or MIS is a central data repository capable of not only gathering,
organizing, and storing student data but also processing and analyzing it and generating
various reports from it. This is MIS in a broader sense. Education Management Information
System (EMIS) is a system that monitors the performance of education programs offered by
the institute and manages the distribution and allocation of educational resources. It
manages, plans, and strategize to implement work processes to execute the education system
smoothly. of course, in the field of education, education MIS has specific roles to help an
educational institution grow.Initially, the primary purpose and use of management
information systems (MIS) were to make school office activities more efficient. MIS
provides administrators and teachers with the information they need for effective planning,
policy development, and evaluation.Nowadays many higher education institutions are
looking forward to implementing comprehensive education management solutions to align
academic processes and deliver a better student experience.
DEPARTMENT OF
EDUCATION
 Despite the overwhelming consequences of the pandemic, this global crisis has
also been an extraordinary time for learning. We are learning how adaptable and
resilient educational systems, policy makers, teachers, students and families can
be.Two crucial factors have shifted due to the pandemic. First, pedagogical
adaptations have proven to be pivotal as the traditional lecturing in-person models
do not translate to a remote learning environment. No matter the type of channel
used (radio, TV, mobile, online platforms, etc.) teachers need to adapt their
practices and be creative to keep students engaged as every household has become
a classroom - more often than not - without an environment that supports learning.
Second, the pandemic has recalibrated how teachers divide their time between
teaching, engaging with students, and administrative tasks.

HOW MIS HELPS IN STUDENTS
INFORMATION MANAGEMENT?
 Students are at the heart of an educational institution.

 Student behavior can be largely tracked through the EMIS. EMIS stores
crucial student data such as personal data, exam records, and even hostel and
library details. Additionally, it keeps track of the day-to-day progress of
students. For Instance, the system can suggest the regions that attract the
majority of students, the gender ratio, mode of registration (social
media/website) which could help the institution further optimize online
admission campaigns. These insights can be eventually used to analyze and
monitor the improvements or retrogression in the students over time.
 Education Management Information System (EMIS) is a program by
DepEd pursuant to MEC Memo No. 83, s. 1981 that provides information to
education administrators in the planning and delivery of educational services.
It is a data collection, processing, dissemination and utilization for planning,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of school operation. The
systematic and updated data serves as a guide on what is to be achieved by the
school and how to achieve it while relying on the available data.
 An EMIS can be defined as 'a system for the collection, integration,
processing, maintenance and dissemination of data and information to support
decision-making, policy-analysis and formulation, planning, monitoring and
management at all levels of an education system.
HOW DOES MIS AID IN THE
MANAGEMENT OF ACADEMICS?
 The same goes for data pertaining to the
educators as well.
 In a developing education institution, the
progress of its educators is equally imperative
as the institution itself. Educators could get a
detailed analysis of student academics, their
weak areas which promote personalized
learning & data-driven insights to improve
student academic outcomes. Administration
can further compare year-on-year student
performances, and change the delivery style
and map the consequent outcomes.

STUDENTS
 As the manager of the class at the very beginning i am bombarded with a lot of
things to do several memorandums were released to cope with the current
system of education that the pandemic brought in. we started in giving limited
orientation as well as gathering of data’s from both parents and students basing
from the previous data that we’ve in our drive and arrived in an algamate
decisions with parents and other stakeholders. Gathering of data which is vital
in an institution is really a challeging task to do but using the EMIS program
that the DEpeD implemented ( See Memo No. 83, s. 1981) that provides
information to education administrators in the planning and delivery of
educational services paves the way to easily coped with this new system of
learning.
 Thus, data helps me achieved the goal of
this program which is to succesfully
deliver and retrieve information about the
learnings of my students amidst pandemic
using offline and online resources that i
could possiblly use for the better and
effecient result.
 This are the platforms that i used to gather
and relay information about my students
achievements and tasks as well as to
discuss lessons.
Through the data collected i was able to identify the weak points and craft a strategic plan to
strengthen it. Some of them were the following : students enrolled in a modular distance
learning faces the hardest time in learning and understanding the subject. In solving that
problem the teachers of SHS department were i am working decided to conduct a virtual
kamustahan / discussion every friday. Thus, that action of ours gives emphasis on the areas
where they don’t fully understand.

 Data gathering is just a piece of cake. A management information system provides the data to
identify non-performing areas and leads to the following benefits such as :
1. Acquire idea to achieve a higher level of efficiency
2. Improves the quality of decisions: Better availability of information reduces uncertainty
and lets teachers make more rational decisions based on reliable data.
3. Promotes better communications between departments in a workplace: When teachers,
department heads and employees are sharing the same information, there is better
communication between them to identify problem areas and find mutually agreeable
solutions.
4. Provides a platform to explore different scenarios for various alternatives and economic
environments: Management is able to explore various alternatives to see the possible results
before making decisions and commitments.
5. Reveals more data about clienteles: With more data about the needs of clients, management
is better able to improve client service and design more effective strategic plan.
Result of a good MIS utilization are as follows:

•Increased customer satisfaction

•Improved quantity and quality of information
•Improved quality and quantity management decisions
•Improved operational efficiency and flexibility
•Improved quality of internal and external
communications
•Improved quality of planning
•Improved quality control and supervision
