Topic:- Applications of Ballistic Galvanometer

o What is Ballistic Galvanometer?

A ballistic galvanomrter is used to measure the total charge that passes through in it as a
Sudden discharge. Such a sudden discharge are met within the discharging of a capacitor
and in electromagneticvinduction

o What is the condition of a galvanometer to be ballistic?

A ballistic galvanometer should have following have following features:-

(i) The moving coil system should not move from its position of rest during the time the
discharge passes through it. To achive this its time period should be large.

(a) Moment of Inertia must be very large

(b) Couple per unit twist must be small

(ii) The damping should be small.

o What is the working principle of a ballistic galvanometer?
The working principle of a ballistic galvanometer is very simple . It depends on the deflection of the
coil which is proportional to the charge passes through it.

o What is the application of ballistic galvanometer ?

The ballistic galvanometer used for various measurement some of very important are mentioned
below:-

(i) Comparision of capacitaces and

(ii) Measurement of capacitance of a capacitor

(i) Comparision of Capacitances:- C1 & C2 are the capacitances to be compared . The
plug K2 is the first put to the left and the capacitor C1 is charged with emf E by passing knob . K of morse key
Therefore, = C1E
After releasing the knob, the capacitor C1 is
discharged through the ballistic galvanometer
if
be the first throw , then

(1+)………………….(1)

Similarly the experiment is repeated with capacitor

C2 by pressing Morse key with the plug on the right
only in key K2
Therefore = C2E
After releasing the knob, the capacitor C2 is
discharged through the ballistic galvanometer
if
be the first throw , then
(1+)………………….(2)
(1) we get

=
(ii) Measurement of Capacitance Capacitor :- The capacitance of a given capacitor may be
measured, if a capacitor of known capacitance is also available.

C is the unknown capacitor, R is a high resistance (10000 Ω) and ‘r’ is a standard resistance
Of 1 ohm, a steady current ‘i’ flows through these resistance.

Initially key K2 is kept open and knob K of the morse key

is pressed down. The C capacitor is charged to a
potential difference iR.
The charge will be , q=CiR……………………..(1)

If the knob K is released the charge of the capacitor go to the

ballistic galvanometer , If be the 1st Throw ,
(1+)………………….(2)

Comparing (1) & (2) , we get

C (1+)………………….(3)
Let, a steady current ig pass through the galvanometer ,
by clasing key K2 , which gives steady difflection .
Therefore,
Difflection couple = restoring couple
niBA = C
or,
Let G be the resistance of the ballistic galvanometer , =

[ r<<<G, then r+G=G]

or, = i

Equation (4) becomes ,

=

From equation (3) , We get

C= (1+)
