Architect : TADAO ANDO

• Known for his sensitive, assured use of reinforced concrete,

• produces works of architecture through the deft manipulation

and framing of light, space, and water.

• Ando was self-taught, seeking out instruction through

apprenticeships with carpenters, designers, and planners as
well as independent reading and travel to visit major works by

•  he found success in his designs for houses—he has completed

over 100 residential projects

• with a special focus on public buildings including religious

structure and museums
Church of light
• city of Osaka.

• Material :Concrete and light.

•  Tadao ando‘s principal focus: simplicity and minimalist aesthetics

structural element was a mere membrane on outer shell
• The main Church of Light, is a box of 6 x 6 x 18 crossed
by a wall at an angle of 15 °, which energizes the space
because being separate from the cover that allows light
to filter inside creating the impression of a floating
roof. The diagonal wall contains the glass entrance
door, which slides horizontally.

• The irony is that the Church of the Light, a small space of

around 100 square meters, has the ability to raise
awareness just by its genus loci.
Light is the origin of all being.
Light gives, with each moment,
new form to being and new
interrelationships to things, and
architecture condenses light to
its most concise being. The
creation of space in architecture
is simply the condensation and
purification of the power of light.”
– Tadao Ando
The geometry is nothing more than six walls and a roof, a minimalist end
point that requires a thoughtful process that is able to eliminate anything
else that is not relevant.

as well as his other projects, has a surreal effect that perceptually changes
material into immaterial, dark into light, light into space
The light from the cross and calculated slits on the building
dematerialized the interior concrete walls and transformed the
dark volume into an illuminated box

One of the slits that interrupts the facade is a cruciform

that is cut into the concrete behind the altar.

He intersected intangible light and solid concrete in a manner

that creates awe, befitting for a place of worship

as well as his other projects, has a surreal effect that

South east direction- main chapel. This is done so that morning
rays of sun enter directly into the chapel.

Access to the compound was made intentionally indirect, unlike

many churches in west.

Visitors are forced to enter from north east corner through a

side street through a forecourt that leads to a corner of the
church near ministers house

Design inspiration
• The design of the building takes ‘harmony’ as the theme.

.
• a variety of circles is presented These circles constructed the space of the building
through ripple-like expansion: from top to bottom, with the overlapping of four
circles.

• With each area’s clear-cut periphery, an enriched variation effect is created

through the interaction between spaces.
The spiral upwards to connect all four floors and frame an oculus at the top that
functions as a skylight

The central skywell floods each floor of exhibition spaces with natural light, creating
spaciousness,
clarity and symbol of hope
