ANGLES

• Two rays that share

the same endpoint
form an angle. The
point where the rays
intersect is called the
vertex of the angle.
The two rays are
called the sides of the
angle.

•Naming an angle:
(1) Using 3 points
(2) Using 1 point -
vertex
(3) Using a number
Using 3 points:
• vertex must be the
middle letter
• This angle can be
named as
Using 1 point:
•use only the vertex
letter
•* Using this method is
permitted when the vertex
point is the vertex of one
and only one angle.
Using a number:
• A number (without a
degree symbol) may be
used as the label or
name of the angle. This
number is placed in the
interior of the angle near
its vertex.
• * The “1 letter” name is
unacceptable when …
• more than one angle has
the same vertex point. In
this case, use the three
letter name or a number
if it is present.
Example

K is the vertex of more than one angle.
Therefore, there is NO in this diagram.

•MEASURING
ANGLES
• You can determine
the measure of an
angle in degrees by
means of a
protractor.
Let’s Measure Some
Angles

To measure angles, we use a Protractor

The outer scale
goes from 0 to 180 Protractor
from left to right.

The inner scale

goes from 0 to 180
from right to left.

Lay one of the rays of the Line up the vertex of the

angle on the line passing angle with the center of the
through zero. protractor.
• Measure this angle from the inner scale.
• This angle measures 75
• Measure this angle from the outer scale.
• This angle measures 100
Draw an Angle that measures
600
First draw a ray.

Next lay the

protractor on top
of the ray with the
end point at the
center of the ray.
Draw an Angle that measures 600
Then draw the other ray passing it
through this point.

Mark the point on the protractor that

you want the other ray to pass
Draw an Angle that measures 60
Your Turn
• Draw your own angle that measures
45
• Remember to line up the vertex with
the center point.
If you need to extend the ray so that it
passes through the zero mark.
Addition of Angles
•The measures of two
or more angles can
be added.
Types of
Angles
Acute Angles
• An acute angle is an angle measuring
between 0 and 90 degrees.
• The following angles are all acute
angles.
Right Angles
• A right angle is an angle
measuring 90 degrees.
• The following angles are both
right angles.
Obtuse Angles
• An obtuse angle is an angle
measuring between 90 and 180
degrees.
• The following angles are all obtuse.
Straight Angle
• A straight angle is 180
degrees.
