Psychosocial Development
Child will encounter a particular
psychosocial problem at each stage. If the
child successfully solves, he/she will develop
a good social trait; if he/she is
unsuccessful, he/she will develop a bad
social trait.
FIRST YEAR / INFANCY
TRUST VS MISTRUST

Develops sense of security.

• Trust is established when babies given


adequate warmth, touching, love, and
physical care.

• Mistrust is caused by inadequate or


unpredictable care and by cold,
indifferent, and rejecting parents.
SECOND YEAR / EARLY
CHILDHOOD
AUTONOMY VS SHAME AND DOUBT

Develops sense of independence.

• Autonomy is doing things for themselves.

• Shame and doubt is caused by


overprotective or ridiculing parents that
makes children to doubt their abilities and
feel shameful about their actions.
3-5 YEAR / PRESCHOOL
INITIATIVE VS GUILT

Finds balance between self-motivated or impulsive and


self-control.

• Initiative may occur when parents


reinforce by giving children freedom to
play, use imagination, and ask questions.

• Guilt may occur if parents criticize, prevent


play or discourage a child’s question.
6 YEARS-PUBERTY/ SCHOOL AGE
INDUSTRY VS INFERIORITY

Develops sense of confidence.

• Industry will occur when child is praised for


productive activities, such as painting and
building.

• Inferiority will occur if child’s efforts are


regarded as messy or inadequate.
ADOLESCENCE
IDENTITY VS ROLE CONFUSION

Experience a unified sense of self.

• Identity occurs when an adolescent asked


himself/herself of who really he/she is.

• Role confusion occurs when adolescents


are unsure of where they are going and
who they are.
YOUNG ADULTHOOD
INTIMACY VS ISOLATION

Forms close personal relationships.

• Intimacy is the ability to care about others


and to share experiences with them.

• Isolation is feeling alone and uncared for


in life.
MIDDLE ADULTHOOD
GENERATIVITY VS STAGNATION

Promotes the well-being of others.

• Generativity is the interest in guiding the


next generation.

• Stagnation is when one is only concerned


with one’s own needs and comfort.
LATE ADULTHOOD
INTEGRITY VS DESPAIR

Enjoys a sense of satisfaction by reflecting on a life


well lived.

• Integrity is developed when people have


lived richly and responsibly.

• Despair occurs when previous life events


are viewed with regret; experiences
heartache and remorse.
