1. ETHICS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY by GEORGE W
REYNOLDS, CENGAGE LEARNING
Definition of Ethics
•Ethics is a set of beliefs about right and wrong
behavior within a society.

•Ethical behavior conforms to generally accepted

norms—many of which are almost universal.

•Ethics are the principles that guide us to make a

positive impact through our decisions and
actions.

•Ethics play an important role not only in our personal

lives but also in business.
Definition of Ethics
Ethics covers the following dilemmas:

•how to live a good life

•our rights and responsibilities

•the language of right and wrong

•moral decisions – what is good and bad?

Importance of Ethics
•Satisfying Basic Human Needs: Being fair, honest
and ethical is one the basic human needs.
•Creating Credibility: An organization that is
believed to be driven by moral values is respected in
the society even by those who may have no
information about the working and the businesses or
an organization.
•Uniting People and Leadership: An organization
driven by values is revered by its employees also.
They are the common thread that brings the
employees and the decision makers on a common
platform.
Importance of Ethics
•Improving Decision Making: A man’s destiny is the
sum total of all the decisions that he/she takes in
course of his life. The same holds true for
organizations.
•Long Term Gains: Organizations guided by ethics
and values are profitable in the long run, though in
the short run they may seem to lose money.
•Securing the Society: newer technology with new
threats replacing the older one.
