ITALIAN CULTURE
What is the main culture of Italy ?
 Italy is home to the epicentre of the Roman Empire, the hub of Catholicism and the birthplace
of the Renaissance. It has a rich heritage in art, history, religion, cuisine, architecture and
fashion. These cultural legacies have been deeply influential in defining Western cultural
tradition.
ITALIAN CULTURE
 Italy is considered one of the birthplaces of Western civilisation and a cultural superpower.
Italian culture is the culture of the Italians, a Romance ethnic group, and is incredibly diverse
spanning the entirety of the Italian peninsula and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

PLACES TO VISIT IN ITALY
Venice
 Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in
a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal
thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San
Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile
bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
FLORENCE
 Florence, capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art
and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-
tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria
dell”Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits
Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”

century walls, its old town centres on Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square lined with
medieval houses. It has a skyline of medieval towers, including the stone Torre Grossa . The
Duomo di San Gimignano is a 12th-century church with frescoes by Ghirlandaio in its Santa
Fina Chapel.

CINQUE TERRE
 Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera
coastline. In each of the 5 towns, colourful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces,
harbours are filled with fishing boats and trattorias turn out seafood specialties along with the
Liguria region’s famous sauce, pesto. The Senteiro Azzurro cliffside hiking trail links the
villages and offers sweeping sea vistas.

PLACES TO VISIT IN ITALY
Mount Vesuvius
 The ruins of Pompeii is one of the best ways to explore what life
would have been like in ancient Italy. When Mount Vesuvius
erupted it buried the town of Pompeii in volcanic ash, preserving
it. That means that you can experience old-world Italy today.
Walk through old fashioned streets and see the houses, shops,
and temples of the people of Pompeii. Learn how they use to live,
there is even an antiquated brothel to visit.
THROW A COIN IN TREVI
FOUNTAIN
 Legend has it that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into Trevi Fountain
that you will return to Rome again someday. That’s not the only reason you
should visit this fountain though. It is more of an artwork than a fountain,
carved from travertine stone and decorated with gods and goddesses. It is
also the biggest fountain in Italy. From the fountain, you can walk to another
of Rome’s famous spots, the Spanish Steps. Climb the 138 steps to the top of
the Piazza di Spagna, for a great view of old Rome.
COLOSSEUM
 This huge amphitheater, the largest of its kind ever built by the Roman
Empire and the largest of their constructions to survive, remained a model for sports
facilities right up to modern times. Built by Vespasian in 72 CE and enlarged by the
addition of a fourth story by his son, Titus, it was a venue for public spectacles and
shows - even mock sea battles.
