IMMEDIATE ACTION ON STRANDING :
• STOP M/E. GO ASTERN IF TIDE IS FALLING.
• CONSIDER REGROUNDING OR BEACHING AT MORE SUITABLE PLACE
FOR BOTTOM DAMAGE
• DON’T GO ASTERN FOR LONG AS IT MAY STIR UP SILT AND
BLOCK/CHOKE THE CONDENSERS
• IF NOT ALREADY DONE RING THE GENERAL EMERGENCY ALARM ;
CALL MASTER, INFORM E/R TO CHANGE OVER TO HIGH SUCTION,
• CLOSE ALL W/T DOORS AND SOUND ALARM
• CHECK FOR CASUALITIES AND MISSING PERSON AT THE MUSTER
POINT
• SWITCH ON DECK LIGHTS AT NIGHT AND APPROPRIATE NAVIGATION
SIGNAL.
• SWING OUT BOATS AND PREPARE LSA APPLIANCE INCLUDING
PORTABLE RADIO.
• CHECK POSITION ON CHART AND NOTE WATER DEPTHS
• SEND URGENCY OR DISTRESS MESSAGE ON VHF AS APPROPRIATE
CAPT RAJIV K VIG 4
• MASTER TO CONSIDER REFLOATING. IF GOING
ASTERN DOES NOT HELP THAN ENGINES TO PUT
AHEAD AND RUDDER SWUNG HAROVER SIDE TO SIDE
(QUICK RUDDER CYCLING), MIGHT HELP IN LOOSING
HERSELF FROM SOFT SHORE. PUT M/E AGAIN ASTERN
WHICH MIGHT CLEAR SHIP OFF GROUND.
• IF BOTTOM IS SOFT DO NOT LOOSE TIME TO GET HER
OFF AS BOTTOM AS DAMAGE WILL NOT BE SEVERE
AS TO CAUSE HER TO FOUNDER SOON. LONGER IT
STAYS THERE MORE SHE WILL SETTLE DOWN
• IN ROCKY BOTTOM SHE WOULD HAVE SUSTAINED
DAMAGE-MAKE A THOROUGH ASSESMENT OF SAME
• PROBABLE RELEASE OF ANY OIL IN WATER TO BE
REPORTED - POLLUTION
CAPT RAJIV K VIG 5

• TAKE ALL AROUND SOUNDINGS AND RECHECK AT REGULAR

INTERVALS

• CHECK NATURE OF SEABED (LEAD LOADING / ARMING THE LEAD)

• ASSESS LOCAL TIDE FOR RANGE, TIMES AND CURRENT STRENGTH AND
DIRECTIONS ; ASSESMENT OF WEATHER ALSO FROM FORECASTS
• DROP AN ANCHOR UNDERFOOT TO PREVENT DAMAGED SHIP SLIDING
OFF INTO DEEP WATER WHERE IT COULD SINK ; THIS WILL ALSO KEEP
THE BOW STEADY N PREVENT SLEWING

• ASK NEARBY SHIPS FOR ASSISTANCE , IF/AS REQUIRED

• SALVAGING A STRANDED VESSEL IS EASIER THAN SALVAGING A SUNK

SHIP
CAPT RAJIV K VIG 6
• IF WEATHER IS BAD CONSIDER TAKING
ADDITIONAL BALLAST TO INCREASE SHIPS
WEIGHT AND AVOID POUNDING

• CONSULT DAMAGE STABILITY DATA AND

CONSIDER JETTISONING ADDITIONAL WEIGHT

• STERN ANCHOR LED FROM AFT PREVENTS

STERN FROM SLEWING

• CHECK HAND-LEAD SOUNDINGS ALL AROUND

• TUG ASSISTANCE OR SALVAGE TO BE SOUGHT
