TREES:
PLANTING AND
PROPAGATION
By Group 1
A Tree is a tall plant with a
trunk and tall branches
made of wood.
Trees can be found
everywhere, most especially
PICTURE
in mountainous areas and
forests.
Classification of Trees
There are two classification
of trees that can be found in
our environment:
Fruit- bearing trees
Non-bearing trees
A fruit-bearing tree is a tree
which bears fruit that is
consumed or used by
animals and humans.
An example of fruit-bearing
trees are;
Mango
Avocado
Papaya
Tamarind
Examples
of Fruit-
bearing
trees
A non-bearing fruit tree is a
tree that does not produce
fruit. This can be due to a
number of reasons, such as
the tree being too young, the
tree not being pollinated, or
the tree being a sterile variety.
Examples of non-bearing trees
are;
Acacia
Mangroves
Balete tree
Examples
of non-
bearing
trees
Benefits of planting
trees and fruit-
bearing trees
1 Trees provide shade and fresh
air around the house.
8
They contribute to the beautiful
landscapes in the city and
countryside.
Propagation:
• can make lots of new plants rather than having to
purchase them from a nursery
• It’s also nice to propagate plants and give them to
friends and family as presents.
Forms of Propagation
Asexual: Sexual:
Plant reproduction using leaves, stem and Propagation of new plants using seeds
root
Types of Propagation
Cutting
This is cutting the vegetative
part of the plant (leaf, stem,
and root) and then planting it
again to regenerate the whole
plant. The three types of
cutting are named after the
plant part being detached/cut:
• Stem cutting
• Leaf cutting
• Root cutting
Types of Propagation
Division
It involves dividing the plant by
PICTURE
digging and moving it to an
already prepared site.
Types of Propagation
Layering
In this technique, the attached
PICTURE and bent branch of the plant is
covered with soil and allowed
to root.
Types of Propagation
Grafting
This involves cutting a twig of
one plant and joining it with the
PICTURE
stem of another plant in such a
manner that they form a unit
and function as one plant.
Types of Propagation
Budding
In this method, a cut is made
in the rootstock and a single
bud with little or no wood is
PICTURE inserted into it in such a way
that they unite and grow as a
new plant.
How to plant trees: step by step
1. Find the Right
Spot
2. Dig the Hole
3. Prepare the
Roots
4. Plant Your Tree
5. Mulch and
Water
Your Tree.
How to propagate step by step
1. Identify the location where you
will snip your cutting from the
main plant.
2. Carefully cut just below the node
with a clean sharp knife or
scissors
3. Place the cutting in a clean
glass. Change out the water
every 3-5 days with fresh room
temperature water.
4. Wait and watch as your roots
grow!
5. Once your roots reach
approximately 3″-5″ then it’s
time to put the cutting in soil!
