What is Big Data?
Big Data” is a massive amount of information that can work wonders. It has piqued the interest of many people over the last
two decades due to the enormous potential it holds. Various public and private sector industries generate, store, and analyse
large amounts of data in order to improve the services they provide
Big data keeps getting bigger and it is estimated that 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are now created daily. One of the main reason
why the big data analytics has become a necessity in the today's world is because of the globalisation, we are living in the age
of technology where we are being connected to each and every people who thousands of miles aways from us with the use of
different kinds of gadgets like phone, laptop etc. and this means of technology collects and manages the data collected from
them into something amazing which could revolutionised the course of future in every sector.
BIG DATA IN HEALTHCARE

Big data in healthcare describes massive volumes of information created by the adoption of
digital technologies that collected patients records and help in managing hospital performance,
otherwise it will too large and complex for traditional technologies.

Big Data has unlocked a new opening in healthcare. Thanks to the considerable benefits and
opportunities, it has attracted the momentous attention of all the stakeholders in the healthcare
industry.
WAYS BIG DATA IS REVOLUTIONISING THE HEALTHCARE

1. Better Patient Tracking, It allows healthcare provider to log and monitor the progress of the person
through the provision of care during their stay there, helps in improving data driven clinical decision
making and helps patients improve self management and care plan adherence.

2. Improved Diagnosis, One of the greatest challenges to diagnoses is proper timely disease identification
now with the use of proper big data technology that offers tolls like predictive analytics is now possible.

3. Improved treatment of Opioid Addiction, With the help of big data the various risk factor that the
opioid brings could be studied from a vague perspective and data's of people could be studied and how
those things worked in them looking for answers to solve it.

4. Faster development of treatment, During Covid-19 first wave the world become helpless. But with the
help of data patterns and data related to genomes charts of millions of people it become possible to create
a vaccine within a period of 12 months where in the past it took years to make vaccine.
WAYS BIG DATA IS REVOLUTIONISING
THE HEALTHCARE
5.Reduce Fraud and enhance Security,
Healthcare organizations can use data management tools to quickly and efficiently identify threats and errors. Comprehensive data management solutions
identify changes in network traffic and detect cyber-attacks and other suspicious behaviours like inaccurate claims.

6. Predictive analytics in healthcare,

The goal of healthcare online business intelligence is to help doctors make data-driven decisions within seconds and improve patients’ treatment. This is
particularly useful in the case of patients with complex medical histories, suffering from multiple conditions.

7. Reduce costs,

It has potential to transform corporate intelligence by revealing consumption trends, providing supply chain analysis, enabling performance monitoring and
ensuring more strategic decisions. Organizations using big data analysis reported an average 8% increase in revenue and a 10% decrease in costs.

8. Efficient electronic health records access,

With big data, records are more accessible within protected information systems in both the corporate and public sectors. Furthermore, cautions and
remainders are now automatic, notifying both patients and doctors of critical information such as prescription tracking
Challenges in Health Care

1. Implementation Cost

Costs continue to be a significant barrier to big data adoption in healthcare. To benefit from big data analytics, medical clinics will need to

purchase technology, computational tools and software to manage the data, and purchase/develop specialised apps.

2. Data Aggregation and Cleaning

Patient data comes from a variety of sources, including payers and other medical institutions where patients have gotten care. Bringing the data

together will necessitate collaboration among several parties as well as agreement on a specific data format. Big data is also heterogeneous and

unstructured. To make this data suitable for analysis, organisations will need to use classification algorithms. Furthermore, you must clean the

aggregated data to assure consistency, accuracy, and correctness. Cleaning can be done manually or automatically using logic principles. You'll

also need to figure out how to cope with new data that arrives in real time.
Challenges in Health Care

3. Security,

Data breaches are widespread in the healthcare industry, and they are costly both financially and in terms of reputation. It is

critical to select reputable providers for big data in healthcare technology and to put encryption and other security measures in

place.

4. Communication Gap,

- Requires Higher Period Training

- High cost while training

INDIA
The Brilliant Future for Big Data in Healthcare

● Precision Medicine

● Wearables and IOT sensors

● Machine Learning
HOW TO MOVE FORWARD WITH BIG
DATA IN HEALTHCARE?
ON THE MANAGERIAL LEVEL,
● Make a commitment to become a data-driven corporation. Identify the current
processes that will require modification and be prepared to undertake the change. Inform the workforce of your
ideas.

● To avoid misunderstandings later in the project, ensure that you have the backing of the main stakeholders.

● Prepare to hire additional employees, such as data scientists and developers, or work with a trusted
technology partner.

● Make a commitment to training your current personnel. Set aside time and money for this purpose.
HOW TO MOVE FORWARD WITH BIG
DATA IN HEALTHCARE?
ON THE DATA LEVEL,

● Make sure the infrastructure is scalable and can follow along with the unavoidable

growth of data volumes.

● Setting up strong data governance practices, defining the desired level of data quality and accuracy, and

determine how the incoming data will be filtered.

● Define data ownership and appoint owners of different datasets. These (Health Care) people will be

accountable for data quality, completeness, etc.

CONCLUSION

Big data is only now beginning to transform healthcare and propel the industry forward in a
variety of ways. Big data in healthcare promises breakthroughs in medicine, technology,
and funding that will improve patient care and increase value in healthcare companies.
However, stakeholders as as providers, payers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, government
and policymakers, and the scientific and research communities will need to collaborate and
innovate in order to rethink the design and performance of their systems.
