TOPIC:

GRAPHING RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

OBJECTIVE:
graphs rational functions
Steps of Graphing Rational Functions
1. Find the y-intercept
2. Find the x-intercept
3. Find the asymptotes
a. Vertical
b. Horizontal
c. Oblique
4. Determine the behavior of the graph
near vertical asymptote/s.
5. Draw the graph.
Cont. Steps of Graphing Rational Functions

Example 1: Graph f(x) =

SOLUTION:
Step 1: Find the y – intercept of the rational
function.
The y-intercept of f(x) is -1.

Step 2: Find the x – intercept of the function.
The x-intercept of f(x) is 1.
Steps of Graphing Rational Functions
Cont. Example 1: Graph f(x) =
 Step 3: Find the asymptotes.
i. The degree of the numerator of f(x) is equal to the
degree of the denominator of f(x), the graph of f(x) has
the line y = as a horizontal asymptote which is y = .
ii. The vertical asymptote is the line x = -.
iii.Since both degrees of numerator and denominator of
f(x) are equal, therefore oblique asymptote does not
exist.
