DEFINITION OF FMS

 Flexible manufacturing system,is a manufacturing system based on multi operation motion

tools, incorporating integrated computer control with associated support function of automatic material
handling. This system performs a degree of flexibility with respect to variation in parts.
 FMS is also defined as a highly automated manufacturing system consisting of one or more CNC
machines, connected by automated material handling system, pick and place robots and all these are
operated under control of central computer. It also has support systems like component load/unload
station,automatic tool changer,tool pre-setter,component inspection station,cleaning station etc.
 Flexible mmanufacturing system is a type of computer integrated manufacturing system. It is also called as
Flexible automation. It is designed to be flexible to manufacture a variety of products at relatively medium
volumes with minimum lead time.
 Flexible manufacturing system is reffered in short form as FMS.
PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS OF FMS

1. CNC machining centre’s or processing stations.

2. Material handling and storage.
3. Computer control systems.
4. Human labor.
5. Inspection centers.
FMS LAYOUT
FUNCTIONS OF COMPONENTS OF FMS

1. CNC MACHINING CENTRES : FMS is usually comprised of number of machining

centre’s to do the function of general purpose machines.Machining centre’s,being highly
flexible, are capable of performing different operations such as milling, drilling, turning,
etc. Thus a part can undergo number of machining operations at the same work station.
2. MATERIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE : Various types of automated material
handling equipment are used to transport the work parts and sub-assemblies between the
processing stations. There is a remote controlled material handling system to control
material handling equipments.FMS is also comprises of material handling system
maintenance centre to do repair and maintenance of material handling equipment.
3. COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM : FMS comprises of a computer room as a control
centre to coordinate various activities of the processing stations and the material handling
system.
 HUMAN LABOUR : Human labour is employed to load the raw work parts on to the
system and unload the finished parts (assemblies) from the system, changing and setting
tools, equipment maintenance and repair,NC part programming and for operating the
computer systems.
 INSPECTION CENTRES : Inspection of raw materials, sub-assemblies, etc. are done in
inspection crntres. Computer aided inspection equipment are used to automate inspection
activity
FEATURES OF FMS

 Following are some of features of a typical FMS.

1. PRODUCTION EQUIPMENTS
2. SUPPORT SYSTEMS
3. MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS
4. COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM
 PRODUCTION EQUIPMENTS : FMS needs different types of processing machines like turning, grinding, milling etc.
Which can produce the required accuracy.
 SUPPORT FUNCTIONS : FMS required support systems such as,
Measuring tools for wears.
Programming for tool offsets on the basis of tool measurements.
Tool maintenance and repair.
Cleaning of chips and work.
 MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM : FMS needs several types of handling system to serve the
various machine tools, such as
1. Transport system to move work parts into and out of workplace.
2. Transport system to move work parts between the various working machines with in the FMS.
3. A buffer storage is used to store the items at the machines.
4. A transfer system to load/unload the work parts on the working machines.sometimes robots can be used to
do this function .
All these components must work efficiently and in the synchronized manner with the machine operations.
ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF FMS

 ADVANTAGES :
1. Reduced cycle time.
2. Low work-in process.
3. Low direct labour cost.
4. Ability to change over to different parts quickly.
5. Improved product quality and consistent quality.
6. High utilization of equipment.
7. Reduced space requirements.
8. Quicker response to market changes.
9. Reduced number of tools and machines required.
10. Compatible with CIM.
