Efforts would be made to integrate and mainstream ISM &H in
health care delivery systems including National Programmes

1.Use of allopathic medicines by ISM practitioners through gazette
notifications/state government orders.

1.Referral ISM hospitals would be renovated, modernized and upgraded
to provide the full range of ISM treatment
2.Identification of the hospitals would be made according to current
availability of motivated staff, OP & IP attendance and locational
advantages.

A scheme to provide RS.20 lakhs to renovate each Ayurvedic
hospital

1. At the PHC and district hospital level, Central Government would
encourage the setting up of specialty centres and ISM clinics & funds
would be provided centrally for drugs listed in the Essential Drugs
Lists

• To set up Panchkarma/Ksharsutra clinics/centres in the existing
allopathic hospitals
• To fill up the gaps of scarcity of essential ISM&H drugs

1.Central government would assist speciality hospitals of allopathy who
wish to establish Panch karma and Ksharsutra facilities

Financial assistance
Five hospitals have been supported for establishment of specialty
clinics of ISM&H with grant of first installment of Rs.42.55 lakhs

1.Private allopathic hospitals would be encouraged to set up specialist
treatment centres of ISM&H and the hiring charges of Vaidya
/Hakims/Homoeopathy this reimbursed to such hospitals entering into
research collaboration protocols

This issue is under consideration of the Central Government

States would be encouraged to consolidate the ISM infrastructure
and raise the salary and social/professional status of ISM practitioners to
encourage inflow of talent and an enhanced work-culture.

• Equal pay scales and promotion avenues for Ayurvedic doctors on
the pattern of allopathic counterparts.
• Stipend for M.D.(Ayurveda) students Le., Rs.7000, Rs.7,500 and
Rs.8,OOO for three year degree.
• stipend to the Ayurvedic Post Graduate students equal to M.D.
Allopathy students.
Government of India is providing assistance
• Establishment of Specialized Therapy Centers with hospitalization
facility
• Establishment of Specialty Clinics of AYUSH
• Supply of Essential Drugs to State Rural & backward area dispensaries
• Distribution of Home Remedy Kits
AYUSH health insurance
Under AYUSH cover, expenses incurred for inpatient Ayurveda,
Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy hospitalization of the
policyholder are taken care of by the health insurance company.

Aim of the study
highlight the various aspects of government policies and initiatives for development of
Ayurveda.
Materials and methods
critically reviewed various books, annual reports, policy documents and various
ancient Ayurvedic literatures. Besides the websites of Ministry of AYUSH, National
Medicinal Plant Board, Central Council for Research on Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS)
and AYUSH research portal have been searched and data was recorded.
Result:
The ministry has identified its mission in terms of seven broad thematic functional
areas of AYUSH activities.

Conclusion:
The government policies are taking firm steps towards promotion and
development of Ayurveda. Research and development towards validation
of Ayurveda is being projected as the thrust area.
