regulation is
the control of
the amount of
fluid as they are
delivered to a
patient through
a vein.
There are several reasons why
you might need to have
fluids administered
intravenously. For instance,
some treatments rely on IV
delivery. These include:
• rehydration after becoming
dehydrated from illness or
excessive activity
• treatment of an infection
using antibiotics
• cancer treatment through
chemotherapy drugs
• management of pain using
certain medications
The purpose of
intravenous fluid
regulation is to control
the amount of fluid that
a patient is receiving,
usually within a given
hour of IV therapy.
Without fluid regulation,
the IV would run in by
gravity at a rapid rate
and could cause fluid or
drug overload.
There are varied types of
IV administration sets,
and they deliver fluid at
different amounts per
drop. Nurses should
always determine the
type of drip chamber
that they are using and
calculate the IV flow per
minute based upon the
amount of fluid that the
administration set
delivers per drop.

Rate:
Milliliters per Hour
ml/hr
= total volume
hour of infusion
Example:
D5LRS 1 liter to run for 8 hours
ml/hr = 1000 ml
8 hrs.
= 125 ml/hr
Number of hours
No. of hours = total volume
ml/hr
Example:
PNSS 1 liter x 60 cc/hr. How long is the
infusion time?
No. of hours = 1000 ml
60 cc/hr
= 16.66
Drops per minute

= total volume x drop factor
