TCP AND UDP IN THE TRANSPORT
LAYER
• TCP – Transmission Control Protocol
• UDP – User Datagram Protocol
Ports and Protocols
• In computer networking, a port is a communication endpoint.

• There are a total of 65,535 ports and each port number is

associated with a protocol

• a port identifies a specific process or a type of network service

such as HTTP, DNS etc.

9
TCP and UDP
• All ports are either TCP or UDP

• TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) – guarantees data delivery

• UDP (User Datagram Protocol) – used more for speed and streaming

Example of a Protocol and Port
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a decentralized naming

system for computers, services, or other resources connected to

the Internet or a private network.

DNS uses port 53 by default and can use TCP or UDP to

communicate.

Network Protocols
• Network Time Protocol (NTP)
• Domain Name System (DNS)
• Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
• Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP)
