Design an Electrical power grid substation

66/22 KV
Introduction :

Nowadays in Egypt the political leadership implement many national projects such as
construction of new power generation stations, improve transfer network, add new
substations, replace overhead lines by underground cables in residential places and get a
great benefit from the development that happened in communication systems and apply it in
distribution network.
with enhancement in technology start to get
an electricity from useful source with low cost
such as wind, hydro or radiation of sun
(which called PV system) which consider as
renewable energy. The total amount of installed
electricity generation capacity reached
about 55.21 thousand
megawatts as of
2017/2018 .
Design an Electrical power grid substation
66/22 KV
 The consideration at designing power grid substation :-

• Low capital cost.

• Reliability of the supply power.
• Low operating cost.
• High efficiency.
• Low cost of energy generation.
• Simplicity of design.
• Reverse capacity to meet future
requirements.
• Robust construction to withstand
foreseeable abnormal forces.
Main components of a substation are :-
• 1- Busbar :-conductor or a group of conductors used for collecting electric power from the incoming feeders and distributes them
to the outgoing feeders
• 2- lightning Arresters :- it discharge the over voltage surges to the earth and protects the equipment insulation from switching
surges and lightning surges .
• 3- disconnecting switches :- disconnecting switches are provided for isolation from line parts for purpose of maintenance it
operated under no load
• 4- Earth switch :- It is used to drain out stray charges left over a transmission line
• 5- circuit breaker :- it is used with relays to sense the fault and relay give a signal to the trip coil of a circuit breaker to remove the
contact
• 6- power transformer :- they are used to step up or step down Ac voltages and transfer power from voltage level to another
• 7- current transformer :- they are used for stepping down the current for measurement , protection and control
• 8- voltage transformer :- they are used for stepping down the voltage for measurement , protection and control
Primary design
• General Equipment Requirements :TransGrid’s HV network is designed to provide very long term reliable
operational service and highavailability. This is achieved by a total design concept that allows the operation and
maintenance of theNetwork without interruption to supply and in accordance with the Principal’s Power System
Safety Rules andoperating procedures. This includes the provision of access and facilities for operation; the ability
to carry out maintenance on anyitem of plant or equipment with no or minimal disturbance to other systems;
facilitate emergency response atany time and in all weather conditions and efficient fault finding for restoration
purposes. As part of the Safety in Design process, the Supplier’s design shall be assessed to ensure these concepts
are not compromised.
• Primary Protection consideration:
• Each protected component has two sets of protection
• Each protection set is independent of the other
• Failure of any one component must not compromise protection
Important additions
• DC Battery Systems
◦ Single Battery System
-Primary protection on different circuit from back-up protection
- Blown fuse or open DC panel breaker cannot compromise protection
- Battery itself is a single point of failure
◦ Dual Battery System
- Primary protection on different battery than back-up
- Battery is no longer single point of failure
