History of Volleyball
The history of volleyball started in the winter in the year 1895 in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, where William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical
education director, created a new game called Mintonette or can be
called as Volleyball, a name derived from the game of badminton, as a
pastime to be played indoors and by any number of players. The game
is also inspired by from other sports such as baseball, tennis and
handball. Another indoor sport, basketball, was also invented on that
time, having invented just ten miles away in the city of Springfield,
Massachusetts, only four years before. Mintonette or Volleyball was
designed to be an indoor sport which is said to be less rough than
basketball and can be played for older members of the YMCA.
Rules and Regulation of Volleyball
We will start from the volleyball court. The court is around is 9m × 18m and is divided into equal
square halves by a net with a width of one meter. The top of the net is around 2.43m above the center
of the court for men's competition, and 2.24m for women's competition, varied for veterans and junior
competitions. The minimum height for indoor volleyball courts is 7 m even though the recommended
height is 8m. There is a line which has a length of 3m from and parallel to the net is called as the
"attack line". This attack line divides the court into "back row" and "front row" areas. Each volleyball
team is consisting of 6 players which is setter, outside hitter, opposite hitter, libero, defensive specialist
and middle blocker. These players is divided by 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row. The
maximum hits is three hits per side. The Player also cannot hit the ball twice in one side. The
volleyball can be played off the net during a volley and on a serve. A ball hitting a boundary line is
called “In” while a ball is called “out” if it hits the floor outside of the court, any of the net or cables
outside the court, the referee stand and the ceiling above a non-playable area. It is legal when the ball
create contact with any part of a player's body. However, It is illegal to catch, hold, or throw the ball. A
player can not block or attack a serve inside the 10 foot line. After the serve, front line players may
switch positions at the net.
