LESSON 2

THE IMPACT OF
COMMUNITY HEALTH
PROBLEMS
Community Health Problems
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
- total monetary value of all the goods and services produces and provided
within a country for a certain period of time .
Some prevailing community health problems we experience :
1. Overpopulation
2. Improper waste disposal
3. Ineffective disease control measures
4. Lack of peace and order
5. Increase in the number of highly urbanized areas
6. Concerns in water- borne and food sanitation
Offices in charge of implementing programs
that cater to the health needs of the
community
1. Universal Health Care
(RA 7875) The National Health
Insurance Act of 1995
 created PhilHealth
 “providing universal health
insurance coverage to Filipinos ,
whether they are formally

or informally employed”
2. Reproductive Health Law
 Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 ( RH Law RA 10354)
 Aims to promote responsible parenthood by providing information on the benefits of birth
spacing and assures Filipinos of access to different methods of artificial birth control
What is the importance of RH law ? ? ?
3.Solid Waste Management Program
 Republic Act 9003 – ecological solid waste management program
 aims to ensure the proper segregation , collection ,transport

,storage, treatment and disposal of solid wastes

(incineration included) by means of the best environmental
practices in ecological waste management
Other advantages of a healthy
environment
1.Clean air to breathe
2. Safe store-bought food resources
3. Uncontaminated food and water supplies
4. Elimination of harmful substances: lead, radon, carbon
gases
 Avoidance of dangerous activities: illegal dumping of waste
materials, sources of pollution, mosquito breeding grounds,
etc.
LESSON 3
THE IMPACT OF
ENVIRONMENTAL
HEALTH PROBLEMS
Environmental Problems on People’s
Health
 Deforestation – destruction of
forests by means of clearing and cutting
of trees
 Water Pollution – contamination of bodies of water such as
lakes, rivers , and groundwater due to discharge of water pollutants
without proper treatment

Air pollution - releasing of dangerous air pollutants/ gases
such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide in the Earth’s
atmosphere
• Illegal mining –unlawful acquisition or extraction of
important minerals such as ore, coal, nickel , gold,
iron and other minerals from Earth
• Overpopulation – excessive number of living
individuals , as compared to the capacity of the
environment

Oil spill – oil released from faulty equipment of oil tankers and
ships; natural and human activities such as water sports

Climate change – result of increasing global warming, which
causes disruptions or rapid changes in Earth’s climate
conditions

Cyanide fishing- method of collecting live aquarium
specimens with the use of sodium cyanide mixture into the
fish’s habitat
• Coral Reef Degradation - process in which coral reefs that
serve as homes for some marine fishes are destroyed by
direct or indirect means
LESSON 4

ACTIONS AND INITIATIVES

TO PREVENT AND
MANAGE
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Impact of Overpopulation on
Environmental Health
a. Impact on other species –Human activities destroy the habitat of
aquatic and terrestrial organisms
b. Impact on food supply from water resources – aquatic ecosystems
are being heavily polluted by chemical and human wastes
c. Contamination of drinking water and land exploitation – The
availability of the fresh water
d. Too much consumption of energy – a there is an increase in
population ,many people also depend on the use of energy resources.
Prevention and Management of
Environmental Health
 Sustainable Development Strategy –the goal of this energy is to achieve
economic growth while protecting the country’s resources and biodiversity
 Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) are tracking down
illegal loggers and preventing the pollution of pristine rivers
 Climate Change – one of the biggest environmental challenges
that the world is facing
 Green Industry – major breakthrough in technology that
endorses sustainable yet economical and practical future int the
global industry
- done by shifting to a low- carbon economy , shifting from
using fossil fuels to renewable energy sources
COLLECTIVE ACTIONS
FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT
Philippine Environmental Laws and
Government Regulations
Presidential Decree(PD)
1586
 Philippine Environmental
Impact Statement System
 requires all agencies and
firms, both public and
private to provide an
environmental impact
statement

(CAA) of 1999
Aims to achieve
quality air for the
Filipino people by
providing air quality
management policy
and program
Republic Act 9275 or Philippine Clean
Water Act of 2004
Provides
protection to the
country’s bodies
of water from
pollution sources
RA 9003 or Philippine Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act of 2000
 contains legal
structure of the
country’s ecological
solid waste
management
program
RA 9729 or Climate Change Act of 2009
 integrates the concept
of climate change in al
policies and
developmental plans
of the government
agencies and units
RA 9512 / Environmental Awareness and
Education Act of 2008
 Endorses
environmental
awareness through
environmental
education and
reinforces the
integration of this in
school curricula

 Promotes proper
measures in the use and
conservation of water
in all areas along with
other policy guidelines
on water quality and
management of water
resources
PD 704 or Fisheries Decree of 1975
 aims to preserve
the productivity of
fishery resources
through
conservation and
protection
PD 1219

aims for the
exploration,
utilization and
conservation of
coral ecosystem
