INTRODUCTION

o The Himalayas that cover the range about 2400 kms consist of youngest and highest mountain system
of the world those envelopes the south facing area between the Indus and Brahmaputra rivers.
o About one third (800 kms) of its central portion transverses Nepal and is known as the Nepal
Himalayas. is a mountain range in South Asia which separates the IndoGangetic Plain from the
Tibetan Plateau
o There are more than thirty Himalayan peaks having height over 7500 m, twenty-two of them lie in
Nepal Himalayas including eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks of the world despite having the
area of mere 147,516sq.km.
o The Himalayan range is one of the youngest mountain ranges on the planet and consists mostly of
uplifted sedimentary and metamorphic rock.
o The Himalayas cover approximately 18% of Nepal and Hill Range Covers 57%
o The Great Himalayas form a climatic barrier between the monsoonal (wet-dry) Indian lowland plains
and the Tibetan desert high plateau.

Scope of Himalayan Tourism in Nepal

o The total contribution of tourism sector to GDP of Nepal is 7.9%.


o Himalayas provides the huge scope of tourism due to its scenic beauty, healthy
environment, beautiful landscapes.
o The hilly areas in the Himalayas offer cool and comfortable climate when
neighboring plains are reeling under scorching heat of the summer season due to
which millions of tourist from different part of the country as well as from
abroad throng the Himalaya tourist centers to escape from the summer heat of
the plains.
o The increasing popularity of the winter sports and craze to enjoy snow fall has
increased the rush of tourists in winters also.
o Some of the famous tourists spot in the Himalayas are Mustang, Taplejung,
Namche Bazar, Annapurna Base Camp, Everest Base Camp, Manag, etc.

Flora and Fauna

o The Eastern Himalayas is a region that harbours thousands of different species, including over 10,000
plants, 900 species of bird, 643 species of butterfly and 300 species of mammal. Many of which are
endangered or critically endangered.
o Its grasslands are home to the densest populations of Bengal Tigers, Asian Elephant, and One Horned
Rhino. Its mountains offer refuge to Snow Leopards, red pandas, takins, Himalayan Black Bear,
and golden langurs, and its rivers contain the  worlds rarest dolphin(Gangetic). It is also one of only 2
places remaining globally where elephants, tigers, and rhinos co-exist.
o Of the estimated 10,000 species of plants in the Himalaya Hotspot, about 3,160 are endemic, as are 71
genera. The largest family of flowering plants in the hotspot is the Orchidaceae, with 750 species.
