PART 1: DESCRIPTION
Multiple-choice cloze
In this part, there is an emphasis on vocabulary and grammar.

FOCUS
The main focus is on vocabulary, e.g. idioms, collocations, fixed phrases, complementation,
phrasal verbs, semantic precision.

FORMAT
A modified cloze test containing eight gaps. There are 4-option multiple-choice items for
each gap.

EXAMPLES – IDIOMS
a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of
each word on its own

Beat around the bush “Man, stop beating around the bush and tell me what happend!”

EXAMPLES – PHRASAL VERBS
a phrase that consists of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of
which is different from the meaning of its separate parts

It was difficult for her to figure out the problem.


1. Figure out: find the answer

The researchers will find out the solution for many diseases soon.
2. Find out: discover

It’s amazing that Paul and Anna get along so well, since they first met!
3. Get along: like each other
The thief got away with the robbery, even with so many cops around.
4. Get away with: do something bad without being punished

I will get through this work today.


5. Get through: finish

As soon as the class has begun, the teacher asked the children to hand over their smartphones.
6. Hand over: give something

It’s wrong to keep our relationship from our parents.


7. Keep something from: not tell, hide

PART 1: PREPARATION
Different types of words are tested in this part e.g. verbs, phrasal verbs,
comparatives, connectors, collocations etc.

Sometimes it is necessary to choose between words with a similar meaning


(semantic precision is required) e.g. fee, price, charge, expense  Look at
them into context!

Grammatical patterns and collocations of words are as important as meaning


e.g. attend a meeting vs. participate in a meeting
PART 1: ACTION!
 Build a Glossary: keep notes of whole phrases as well as individual words in context

Using English Corpora

 Pay attention to grammatical patterns: you need to know which word is correct because of the
preposition, adverb or verb form which follows

For instance
In the sentence: ‘You may be … in applying for this job’.
Options: keen, interested, enthusiastic and eager
The preposition “in” makes “interested” the correct option
You are keen on, interested in, enthusiastic about and eager for something
PART 2: DESCRIPTION
Open cloze
In this part, there is an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.

FOCUS
The main focus is on awareness and control of
grammar with some focus on vocabulary.

FORMAT
A modified cloze test containing eight gaps.

PART 2: PREPARATION
 The focus of the gapped words is either grammatical, such as articles, auxiliaries,
prepositions, pronouns, verb tenses and forms, or lexico-grammatical, such as phrasal verbs,
linkers and words within fixed phrases.

 The answer will always be a single word.

 Spelling must be correct in all the Use of English parts of the paper

 You should not fill any of the gaps with a contraction (e.g. ‘didn’t’, ‘he’ll’), as these
count as two words. Exception: can’t = cannot

The word you choose must fit grammatically and also be coherent with the text as a whole

PART 3: DESCRIPTION
Word formation
In this part, there is an emphasis on vocabulary

FOCUS
The main focus is on vocabulary, in particular the use of affixation, internal changes and
compounding in word formation.

FORMAT
A text containing eight gaps. Each gap corresponds to a word. The stem of the missing word
is given beside the text and must be changed to form the missing word.

PART 3: PREPARATION
 Forming different words from the same stem word, e.g. ‘compete’, ‘competition’,
‘competitor’, ‘competitive’, ‘competitively’, and the negative forms of these words e.g.
‘uncompetitive’.

 Sometimes the missing word will need to be in the plural, and sometimes it will
need to be in a negative form (pay attention to the text around the gap)

 Not only affixes. Sometimes internal changes will need to be made (e.g. ‘long’ to
‘length’).

 In every case the stem word will have to be changed.

Six separate items, each with a lead-in sentence and a gapped second sentence to be
completed in two to five words, one of which is a given ‘key’ word.

PART 4: PREPARATION
 You will have to Paraphrase – Rewriting sentences to make the second
sentence mean, as far as possible, the same as the lead-in sentence.

 Your answer must contain up to 5 words


PART 5: DESCRIPTION
Multiple choice
In this part, there is an emphasis on detailed understanding of a text, including the
expression of opinion, attitude, purpose, main idea, detail, tone, implication and gist.
Candidates are also tested on their ability to recognise meaning from context and follow
text organisation features, such as exemplification, comparison and reference.
FOCUS
Detail, opinion, attitude, tone, purpose, main idea, gist, meaning from context,
implication, text organization features (exemplification, reference).
FORMAT
A text followed by six 4-option multiple‑choice questions.

PART 5: PREPARATION
 Read through the text before looking at the questions.

PART 6: DESCRIPTION
Gapped text
In this part, there is an emphasis on text structure, cohesion and coherence,
and candidates’ ability to follow the development of a long text
FOCUS
Cohesion, coherence, text structure.
FORMAT
A text from which sentences have been removed and placed in jumbled order after
the text. Candidates must decide from which part of the text the sentences have
been removed.

PART 6: PREPARATION
 Read through the text with gaps in it first so that you gain an overall
idea of the structure of the text and the development of the writer’s
ideas

 Look carefully at the information before and after the gap. Check
that the text before and after the gap follows on logically.

 You shouldn’t rely on ‘word spotting’ = assuming that if the same


word, name, date, etc. appears in the surrounding text and one of the
options, that is automatically the right sentence to fill the gap.
PART 7: DESCRIPTION
Multiple matching
In this part, there is an emphasis on locating specific information and detail, and
recognising opinion and attitude, in one long text or a group of short texts.

FOCUS
Detail, opinion, specific information, implication.

FORMAT
A text or several short texts, preceded by multiple-matching questions. Candidates must
match a prompt to elements in the text.

PART 7: PREPARATION
 You will need to skim and scan texts quickly for specific
information

 Avoid choosing an answer on the basis of similar vocabulary alone

 Reading book and film reviews or articles in which a number of


different people express their thoughts about their hobbies is a good
way of preparing for this part of the test
