PROJECT BACKGROUND
• Chiredzi South is home to Hippo Valley Estate and Mkwasine Estate, both of which
specialize in sugar cane and citrus fruit production respectively.
• The district has an average of 198 (54%) days of sunshine in a calendar year which makes it
an ideal location for the project.
• Zimbabwe currently relies on power imports from nearby countries like South Africa and
Mozambique, the Photovoltaic solar system will have an output of 50MW.
• Zimbabwe receives an annual mean radiation of 20 MJ/m² a day with a peak of 26 MJ/m²
and for Chiredzi South it is at an average of 22 MJ/m². This makes the location ideal.
• This will reduce the load on the already overloaded national grid whilst creating more than
200 jobs in the local area.
• Zesa recently introduced the net metering system and the system will be able to can feed
excess power back into the ZETDC Network through a grid tied invertor during off peak
hours.
• This will also ensure domestic customers benefit by buying their electricity at the lower
tariff band.
