History of Swimming

 Stone Age

 Earth is covered with 70% water

 Prehistoric man swim in order across rivers and lakes

 Cave paintings in ancient Egypt and Greece

 Swimming became a sport in the 19th century when National


Swimming Society of Great Britain organized competitions
Swimming Competitions

o Competitive swimming was first introduced in 1800 - Great Britain


by the National Swimming Society
o The swimming strokes used during this time were Breast Stroke
and Side Stroke
o In 1873, John Trudgen - front crawl using flutter kick or
scissor kick, which gave birth to freestyle
o 1896 Greece Olympics - swimming was included.
The first gold medal won by Hungary’s Alfred Hajos:
100 meter and 1200 meter freestyle
o 1900 Paris, France Olympics – backstroke
relay races and water polo were included in the list of
swimming events.
 1908, Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) was formed
 1922 Paris, France Olympics, Johnny Weissmuller, first
swimmer to have swam the 100 meter race in less than 1
minute
 Mark Spitz in 1972 broke all records in the history of swimming
won 7 gold medals. He won a total of 9 Olympic gold medals, a silver, a
bronze, 5 pan-am golds, 31 other amateur titles and 8 college titles.
1972 Olympics was held at Munich, Germany
 Michael Phelps won 16 Olympic gold medals. He won 6 gold
and 2 bronze medals in 2004 Athens Olympics. In 2008
Beijing Olympics, he won 8 gold medals.
 Joseph Isaac Schooling gave its first Olympic gold medal in the 100-
meter butterfly in the 2016 Olympics
Swimming in the Philippines

 Swimming is not entirely new to us Filipinos, given the fact, that we are
an archipelago, thus we are surrounded with different bodies of water.
Somehow swimming has natural skills to us.

 American military men introduced competitive swimming in the


country.

 First swimming pool constructed at Fort McKinley YMCA in 1907.

 Other pools were constructed: American Columbian Club, YMCA Manila


and Manila Polo Club – inspired Filipinos to learn the sport.
 In 1910, The first swim meet organized at Fort McKinley marked the
formal inception of swimming as a competitive sport.

 In 1912, Conrado Benitez emerged as the outstanding Filipino swimmer.

 In 1913, during the Far Eastern Games held in Manila, the three
Filipinos won the championship match against China, Filipino swimmers
were: Conrado Benitez, J. Del Pan, C. Aivile and L. Cristobal.

 In 1920, University of the Philippines and Philippine Women’s University


- competitive swimming in Physical Education
