HANDOUT 1
INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH

1-1
Discussion Plan

 What is Research?-Definition-Why research?-

Examples of Research-How to do Research?-
Research Process-

 WHAT IS RESEARCH?

 ‘A CAREFUL INVESTIGATION OR INQUIRY

SPECIALLY THROUGH SEARCH FOR NEW FACTS IN
ANY BRANCH OF KNOWLEDGE ’

 - Advanced learner’s dictionary of current English

 A systematic Inquiry whose objective is to provide
information to solve managerial problems.

1-2
What is Research?......
 ‘IS A SYSTEMATISED EFFORT TO GAIN NEW
KNOWLEDGE’

 -Redman and Mory

 AN ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE EXISTING

STOCK OF KNOWLEDGE MAKING FOR ITS
ADVANCEMENT

 A SCIENTIFIC SYSTEMATIC SEARCH FOR

PERTINENT INFORMATION ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC

1-3
 BASED ON LOGICAL RELATIONS AND NOT JUST BELIEFS

 WILL INVOLVE EXPLANATIONS OF METHODS USED FOR DATA

COLLECTION

 WILL ARGUE WHY THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE

MEANINGFUL

 EXPLAIN ANY LIMITATIONS

 MUTIPLICITY OF POSSIBLE PURPOSES FOR YOUR

RESEARCH (DESCRIBING, EXPLAINING,UNDERSTANDING,
CRITICISING AND ANALYSING

1-4
Why study Research?
 Business Research is a systematic inquiry
whose objective is to provide information
to solve managerial problems. It helps a
manager to take wise decisions.
 Research provides you with the
knowledge and skills needed for the fast-
paced decision-making environment

1-5
Why Research is important in Business?

 The modern day business has many risks

associated with business decisions. So, it
is very important to have a sound
information base.
 wrong decision would result in multiple
losses
 So, better information is needed for taking
wise business decisions in a competitive
scenario.

1-6
 1.There are more variables to consider in
every decisions.
 2. More knowledge exists in every field of
management
 3. Global and domestic competition is more
vigorous with many businesses downsizing to
focus on primary competencies, reduce costs,
and make competitive gains.
 4. Government continues to show concern
with all aspects of society, becoming
increasingly aggressive in protecting the public.

1-7
5. Workers, shareholders, customers, and general public
are demanding to be included in company decision
making. They are better informed now and are sensitive
to any move that might affect their interests.
6. The power and ease of use of today’s computers and
WWW have given us the capability to analyze data to
deal with today’s complex managerial problems.
7. The number and power of the tools used to conduct
research have increased, in tune with the growing
complexity of business decisions. (Think of SPSS,
Minitab, X-STAT, SigmaStat softwares used in data
analysis.)
8. Datamining is done by many organizations and they
know how to extract meaningful knowledge from volumes
of data contained within internal databases.
1-8
Research can be used to:

 Advance in a particular enquiry or subject.

 Improve practice, process and enhance
knowledge in a particular field
 Analyse and interpret changes that occur
over a period of time
 Ascertain if there is a relationship and why
the relationship is formed.

1-9
Matters in Research

 Relationship
 An association
 An interdependence
 (We would discuss all these in detail later
in Types of Research and Data Analysis)

1-10
Examples of Research
 Does introduction of computers increase efficiency of
employees?
 Why is the brand Zain popular in Oman?

 Why small business enterprises are not doing well in

Oman?
 What are the views and opinions of the beneficiaries of

SANAD Programme?
  Why student grades are poor in descriptive
modules?
  Will eating meat cause heart attacks?
  Why children like cartoons?
  What are the factors considered by an investor before
making investments?
  How does a citizen choose his banker?

1-11
 How does a client feel about the services of his
banker?
Research Wheel
 Please refer to Page 3 of Handout 1

1-12
Research Problem
 . A research problem tells you what you
intend to research.
 Example
 Rising share prices (why ?)
 Declining sales of a company (why ?)
 Are advertising budget and sales related?
(relation)

1-13
Literature review
 is a synthesis of the results of earlier studies
done in the area and involves raising questions
that needs further research
 The most important function of the literature
review is to ensure you read widely around the
subject area in which you intend to study.
 A literature review will lead the research
towards the specific information (key variables)
that need to be collected or hypotheses to be
tested that serve as the theoretical framework of
the research design
1-14
Conceptualizing the research
design
 A research design involves a series of
rational decision making choices- planning
of the actual study- type of research to be
carried out, type of investigation required,
study setting, selection of sample, and
collection and analyses of the data.
 Researcher’s obligations
 Develop a creative research design
 Provide answers to important business questions
 the selection of an appropriate design is very important in
arriving at valid findings, comparisons and conclusions.

1-15
RESEARCH PROCESS
 Please refer to Page 6 of Handout 1

1-16
Constructing an instrument
for data collection
 Anything that is used as means of
collecting information for your study is
called a research tool or instrument.
 Example; observation forms,
questionnaires, interview guides are all
classified as research tools.

1-17
 Sample should be selected in such a way
that it represents the characteristics of
the population being studied.

 Random/probability sampling
 Non probability sampling
 Mixed sampling

1-18
Writing a research proposal
 This will be discussed later

1-19
Research Process ……Continued….

 Collecting data
 Processing data
 Writing Research Report

 Questions
 Practice Exercises
 MCQs
