ELECTRICITY IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Do chemical engineers work with electricity?

 Chemical engineers also work in a variety of

manufacturing industries other than chemical

manufacturing, such as those producing energy,
electronics, food, clothing, and paper.
 Chemical engineers apply principles of physics,

mathematics, mechanical and electrical

engineering, as well as chemistry.
ELECTRICITY IN CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING

How do chemical engineers use energy?

 Chemical engineers are involved with developing

technologies to convert renewable biomaterials

into electricity and transportation fuels.
 Corn and sugar are now widely used to produce

ethanol, a gasoline substitute

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY

The law of conservation of energy states

that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only
converted from one form of energy to another.
Example:
 The chemical energy in coal is converted into

electrical energy at a power plant.

 The chemical energy in a battery can also supply

electrical power by means of electrolysis.
