By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
The solution set consists of all values that make the equation true. For this
equation, the solution set is all real numbers because any real number
substituted for will make the equation true.
A condition equation is true for some values of the varible. For exaple, if we are to solve the
equation , we have the following:
The solution consist of one number: {-4}. It is the only solution and, therefore, we have solved
a conditional equation.
An inconsistent equation results in a false statement. For example, if we are to solve , we have
the following.
Solution:
This equation can be written in the form by subtracting 19 from both sides.
However, we may proceed to solve the equation in its original form by
performing algebraic operations.
The solution is

Solution:
Apply
the distributive property.
Combine like terms.
Place - terms on one side and simplify
Multiply both sides by , the reciprocal of 9.
Linear equations in
two variable
• An equation is said to be linear equation in two variables if it is
written in the form of , where a, b, and c are real numbers and
the coefficients of x and y, i.e a and b respectively, are not equal
to zero.
• Linear equations in two variables, explain the geometry of lines
or the graph of two lines, plotted to solve the given equations.
As we already know, the linear equation represents a straight
line. The plotting of these graphs will help us to solve the
equations, which consist of unknown variables.
There are three types of system of linear
equations in two variables, and three types of
solutions.
•
An independet system has exactly one solution
pair . The point where the two lines intersect is
the only solution.
• An incosistent system has no solution. Notice that
the two lines are parallel and will never intersect.
• A dependent system has a infinitely many
solutions. The lines are coincident. They are the
same line, so every coordinate pair on the line is a
solution to both equations.
GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF EACH TYPE OF SYSTEM
EXAMPLE 1 Determine whether an ordered pair is a solution to a system of equations
Determine wether the ordered pair (5,1) is a solution to the given system of
equations.
SOLUTION
Sunstitute the ordered pair (5,1) into both equations.
TRUE
TRUE
The ordered pair (5,1) satisfied both equations, so it is the solution to the system.
EXAMPLE 2 SOLVING A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES BY GRAPHING
Solve the following system of equations by graphing. Identify the type of system.
Solution:
The lines appear to intersect at the point (-3,-2). We can check to make sure that this is the
solution to the system by substituting the ordered pair into both equations.
The solution tothe system is the ordered pair (-3,-2), so the system is independent.
