Insertion: muscle is
attached to movable
bone and when muscle
contracts, the insertion
moves toward the origin
Common types of body movements
1. Flexion: decreases the angle of the joint and brings
two bones closer together
2. Extension: increases the angle or the distance
between two bones or parts of the body
3. Rotation: is movement of a bone around its
longitudinal axis
4. Abduction: moving a limb from midline or median
plane of the body
5. Adduction: it is the movement of a limb toward
body midline
6. Circumduction: the proximal end is stationary and
its distal end moves in a circle
Special Body Movements
1. Dorsiflexion: lifting the foot
2. Plantar flexion: depressing the foot
3. Inversion: turn sole medially
4. Eversion: turn sole laterally
5. Supination: turning backward
6. Pronation: turning backward
7. Opposition: the action by which you move
your thumb to touch the tips of the other
fingers on the same hand
